19 times! 19 times? That feels like even more than normal, but that’s how many times the Cubs and Cardinals will meet this year, at a minimum. As we opened the book on this 2021 version of this rivalry, I have to say, that chapter one was pretty, prettay, enjoyable.
It all started on the first pitch of the game, as Joc finally showed us some of that spring training power hitting his 2nd bomb of the year. I was there in person for the first one; we all remember what he thought the second one was going to be. But this one, yeah, he finally got #2. Actually, Joc has been hitting his ass off lately, after a horrendous start. The power hasn’t necessarily been there, as it was on the first pitch of this evening’s tilt, but he has certainly been heating up. Good; we didn’t bring him in to be some bum. Glad he’s finally making Jed look good; hopefully he can continue this hot hitting.
From there, it was a close, tightly played game, as many of these Cubs Cards games can be. The Cards closed within one run in the bottom of the 7th, before the Cubs put their permanent stamp on this game. 8 runs in the 8th! Yes, that’s not a typo, and as Boog told us on the broadcast, those 8 runs that the Cubs scored in the 8th inning are more than our pitching staff has given up the entire year!!! I love those kind of stats. Our bullpen, which has been one of our strengths, has only given up 7 runs in the 8th inning all year. I like it.

I love seeing home runs just as we all do, but I like seeing highlights of a game that don’t involve them either. Besides that first pitch, the remaining 11 Cubs’ hits remained in the ballpark. We even got some help from some walks, a couple of the bases loaded variety, which is a category that the Cards lead the majors in. We even saw sure handed, prized off season acquisition, Nolan Arenado boot a couple; big smile on my face seeing those. I liked Nolan, before he went to the worst franchise in baseball. And now, he falls into that category of everybody donning that uniform nowadays, including their NOT a hall of fame catcher Yadier Molina; he’s the worst. But back to the Cubs pounding…
Here’s me sitting there, watching this outburst, enjoying the Cubs pour it on, hoping they save some of these runs for the rest of the series… hoping that just as most of the boys seem to be swinging a hot stick right now, they won’t all go cold at the same time. This offense is building up some trust nowadays. They are putting runs up on the board, and that has equaled Ws. Oh yeah, and the professor looked halfway decent in this game; it’d be great if Kyle could be Kyle from here on out.
One down, eighteen to go, between the teams that will most likely determine the winner of this division when it’s all said and done. Yeah, I said it. The Cards just always stick around, like that weed you can’t get rid of in your back yard. But the Cubs…maybe they can extend this golden era… maybe they’re not as dead as everyone thought. Maybe they go out and ADD before the deadline, a left handed starter please, and make a run at this very winnable division. Here’s hoping the rest of this book goes like the first chapter. Go Cubs!
