May 16, 2021: Picking a Horse

Now that the Bulls season is officially over, let’s talk about who we want to win the NBA Finals. I already did this exercise for the NHL and the Stanley Cup; the result of this go around will be very similar to that one.

Let’s start off eliminating the easy ones. The absolute last team I would want to win it all is the Lakers. There is no team that drums up the hate like a team that LeBum plays for. Of course, all the winning over the years before he got there doesn’t help either. This historic winning eliminates the Celtics, Warriors, and Spurs as well. We don’t need the Lakers or Celtics to add to their lead in overall titles; we don’t need the Warriors breaking that tie with us, and we don’t need the Spurs tying us. Next up is the newest version of the “super team”; hell no I don’t want the Nets to win it all, unless of course they’re facing the Lakers in the Finals… but no, no way do I want to see another artificially built all star team win anything. OK, that’s 25% out. Next up…

As I look through the rest of the qualifiers, I don’t see a lot of teams that I really do not want to see win, but… we’ll push ahead… we’ll find reasons. OK, this is easy: let’s rule out anybody who qualified either 9 or 10 in either league, because that’s straight up BS anyways. That means the Grizzlies, Pacers, and Hornets are gone; we had already ruled out the Spurs. This play in game is flat out dumb; so now 2/3 of the league is in? What kind of shit is that? The NBA might as well do a play in tournament, for all the teams falling outside of the top 8 in each league; let’s let everybody in the playoffs. Dumb. The last team in that group of bottom 4 in each league is the Wizards; they’re out… because they beat us in the playoffs that one year and because Jordan ended up playing out his golden years there. They should have left their name the Bullets. OK where are we at now? 9 down, 11 to go.

The Hawks; don’t like them. I did love Dominique back in the day, but Trae Young is weak to me… always going for that Oscar every night, trying to get the calls… weak. The Clippers? They had their chance last year and blew it; screw them. Also, the Mavericks with the “next Larry Bird” are not one of my favorites; ruling them out. That leaves us with 4 teams in each conference that I would not mind seeing win it all; let’s rank those.

Out west, we have the Nuggets coming in at #8; they are the oddball of the remaining Western Conference teams, meaning, the only one that hasn’t lost to the Bulls in the Finals. Yes, the Trailblazers, Suns, and Jazz all fall in that category, and thus, while I did hate them for an NBA Finals or two, since we did beat them, I haven’t really maintained those feelings. I like Lillard with the Blazers, and think Portland would be a great stadium to go see the Bulls play in. That kid Booker is pretty good from the Suns; hope they do well. But it’s the Jazz who I would like to see win it all. Although the Nuggets have never been to the Finals, the Trailblazers have won one, while the Suns and Jazz are 0-2. I just like the way the Jazz play ball; I hope they come out of the West.

Out east, it’s pretty easy picking a horse. Yes, I wouldn’t mind to see the 76ers get there, although they have won 3 titles already. I wouldn’t mind seeing the Greek Freak win one for the Bucks, even though that would make a lot of Packer fans happy. Even the Heat, who I still hate, because of Jimmy Buckets, I wouldn’t mind seeing them do it either. But the call for the team I want to come out of the East, and for that matter, win it all, is easy: the New York Knicks.

How can I root for the Knicks? Easy. First off, while I did build up a healthy hate for them back in the day, we always kicked their ass when it counted, except for the Hue Hollins assist against an MJ-less Bulls team; they still couldn’t close out the deal. But anyways, it’s more about the guys on the team now. If it was just 1 of these 3, maybe the feeling wouldn’t be there, but it’s Rose, Taj, AND Thibs. Just like I’ll be rooting for Coach Q on the ice, I’ll be rooting for Coach Thibs on the court. Here are two guys who should still be coaching in Chicago IMO. Although only one brought home the hardware, I love them both. The fact that Rose and Taj are out there, only helps make the decision. So a Jazz and Knicks Finals with the Knicks winning in 7 games? I’ll take that.
