Coming off Saturday’s game against the Reds, I thought maybe the Cubs would go on a bit of a run. 12 runs should have been enough, but it wasn’t; the Cubs would lose the series to Cincy. Now enter the Dodgers, who after a red-hot start, have been scuffling, most recently losing a series to the Brewers; thanks LA. With a postponed game without rain on Monday night, Tuesday would be a double header vs the Dodgers; let’s do this.
In Game 1, just like in Game 6 of the 2016 NLCS at Wrigley, it would be Hendricks vs Kershaw. Since that game almost 5 years ago, both the Cubs and Dodgers have each won 1 World Series title. The Cubs beat the Dodgers in that NLCS on their way in 2016, while the Dodgers beat the Cubs in the NLCS in 2017; the Dodgers wouldn’t capture their title until last year, the COVID shortened season. We never got a chance to settle that score… certainly this double header wouldn’t do the trick, but seeing Hendricks Kershaw again, certainly brought back some memories for me. Hendricks did his thing again, and Kershaw… didn’t make it out of the first. A nice 7-1 win for the Cubs highlighted by the father teaching his kid how to throw back an opponent’s home run ball from the bleachers in the last inning.

Trevor Bauer… yeah, before he became the annoying, reigning Cy Young winner, he was with the Indians, in that same year, 2016. Of course, he shared the same experience as Kershaw, losing a big postseason game in Wrigley. Game 5, World Series, KB’s HR, which sparked the comeback from down 3-1… I’m sure you don’t need a refresher, but it’s always good to think about… it’s always good to remember. I wonder if the boys felt the same way; maybe they felt those good vibrations too. Well, it looked good, even though the Cubs couldn’t score with RISP. Up 1-0, with Kimbrel coming in, game time, right? Well, no. A high fly ball from Muncy (does anybody call him Munchy, because he looks like he can put down some snacks) landed in the basket, and off to extra innings we went. After the Dodgers put up a 2 spot in the top of the 8th (yes, the 8th inning was an extra inning in this 7 inning doubleheader game), it looked bleak. Well, another member of that 2016 postseason, the co-MVP of the NLCS against the Dodgers, Javy Baez, channeled his 2016 mojo and hit a 2 out, 2 run home run to send it to another extra inning. This time, the kid Justin Steele, who I really like, even more so after his reaction coming off the mound, shut down LA. The Cubs needed to score 1, and they did. David Bote walked it off; Cubs sweeeeeeeeep!
And just like that, the Cubs have moved into 3rd place in the division, 3.5 games back of the Cardinals? Yeah, the Cardinals… that’s cool. Seeing the Cubbies sweep the Dodgers, remembering all those 2016 memories, it was a good day. Let’s keep this mojo rolling. Go Cubs!
