As the NFL draft wrapped up on Saturday, my brother sent me a text with all the positions taken late by the Bears; he asked me if I was happy… I said, yes, of course; how can any Bears fan be unhappy right now? After the trade up and selecting of Justin Fields in the 1st round, it was cherry time… it was all good from there… no matter who the Bears took from there on out, there was no way for it NOT to be a great draft for our team. But the Bears just didn’t stop, they didn’t mail in the rest of the draft either. Actually, they did it again; they traded up for their next pick too, which just so happened to be at another position that I wanted them to take.
Yeah, say what you want about Pace, and I have… yes, I was of the opinion that he shouldn’t be here any more, but… I will say this; when there is somebody out there that he wants, they go get them, and although the biggest example of that in the past was the Trubisky pick (it feels a little less painful to say that now), which as we all know turned out to be a massive bust, the attitude has remained. Trading up to get Fields may have saved his ass, and if Fields turns out to be what some folks think he can be, has put the Bears on an upward trajectory again. If there was another need after QB, it was the offensive line. Pace traded up into the 2nd round to get OT Teven Jenkins from Oklahoma State. Have you seen the stuff about him already? A lot of folks had this guy pegged for the first round; why did he slide? Not sure, but based on his attitude, it surely would have inspired me to take him earlier, so when he was sitting there 7 picks into the 2nd round, Pace did his thing… again, and the Bears got what feels like another great pick. If his play can match his talk…

The Bears doubled up on the O-line with another tackle Larry Borom. It’s hard to ever be mad when your team is investing in the trenches, especially after picking up a potential franchise QB… got to protect him no? Plus, beefing up the line… does that mean that Nagy may actually run the ball some more? Nah… maybe? The RB and WR came directly after that in the 6th round with Khalil Herbert and Dazz Newsome. Bonus alert: Newsome is actually a kick returner too, which was another need. Then came a CB with Thomas Graham Jr, and another investment in the trenches, this time on the defensive side of the ball with DT Khyiris Tonga.
Yeah, am I happy? Hell yeah… that was already set once I saw the bottom of the screen turn orange, and it was announced that the Giants had traded the 11th pick to us… the Bears traded up… it has to be QB… Fields or Jones… I would have been OK with either, but felt a lean towards Fields… and then the Bears took him… amazing. Yes, after the Fields pick, nothing could screw the draft up, but then the Bears actually draft more O-lineman which was the 2nd position of need, and grab some more offensive players with a RB and a WR; heck yeah I’m happy. And I’m ready for the season to begin… hope has been renewed; I haven’t been this excited about the Bears since the playoff game in 2018. Not sure if that will immediately parlay into success in 2021, but why not? I’m ready. When does training camp start? Bear Down baby!
