The one I’m thinking about today though are those Stanley Cup Blackhawk teams of the 2010s… I say 2010s as if that was so long ago… Seeing another one of the boys, Andrew Shaw, announce his playing days are over on Monday was just the latest example of the many championship changes we continue to see.
We all have our favorite players over the years; there have been many great ones that made Chicago their professional home, in turn becoming our sports heroes. You don’t need to win a championship to reach that status, however… when you DO win a championship here in Chicago, you are a legend for life, not only the superstars, but every single person on that roster; we will always remember you. Andrew Shaw is a good example of that. Who didn’t love the way this kid played? Who can forget his face in the Bruins series? More important was the role he played, the impact he made in his own way, on the 2013 & 2015 Stanley Cup teams. You need guys like THIS. Yes, you need the star power; don’t know of any championship team that didn’t have stars. But, you also need guys willing to do the dirty work, willing to mix it up, willing to do whatever it takes to win, even if they aren’t the most talented athlete; pretty sure every championship team has these guys too. Not taking anything away from Shawzy, but you know what I mean, right? He was one of those guys that helped us win it all, and because of that, we will love him forever. Good luck Andrew.

Hope he’ll be OK with it, and be healthy for many years. I’m sure he knows that he never has to pay for another beer in his lifetime in this city…
