April 12, 2021: Down the Tubes

Been watching the Bulls lately? No? Lucky you. Yes? Yeah, me too. It seemed like just yesterday I was writing about the Easter Miracle that happened when the Bulls beat the undermanned Nets at the UC; is it just me, or are most of the teams that we play lately down a guy or two? Hey, I don’t care, not our problem. But you do still need to beat who’s on the court; that hasn’t been happening. With this latest string of shitty basketball, I feel like the Bulls season is going down the tubes.

We did follow up the victory over the Nets with wins over the Pacers and Raptors; I felt like we could really get on a roll. Then the Hawks ruined Zach’s 50 point party… then the worst team in the NBA the Timberwolves kicked our ass… then the Grizzlies smacked us around. I’m not saying the Bulls should win every game, but based on the predicament we’re currently in, if the goal is to make the playoffs, then we needed to win at least 2 of these 3 games. Playing 500 basketball from here on out is not going to get the job done, but wait… did you hear about the playoff structure for this year? Yeah, get this: the 7 and 8 seed will play each other; whoever wins is in. Then the 8 seed will play the winner of the 9 and 10 seed to see who gets the final spot. So you’re telling me there’s a chance???

Well, yes, yes I am. The Bulls currently sit in the 10th spot, a game and a half ahead of the Raptors. So now I’m supposed to track the standings to see if the Bulls finish 10th in the conference? What lofty goals we have… We should be right in that 7 or 8 spot; I know, I know… what’s the difference at the end of the day. It’s NBA purgatory… no shot in the playoffs, and no high draft picks. At this point, are we rolling out the Boylen tank to finish off the year? No… heck no… The whole point this year was to make progress. With Donovan at head coach, that seemed inevitable. Lavine has made huge strides; we’ve now acquired another all-star. What gives?

Well, I’m not sure if the Bulls, with their new acquisitions, have completely gelled yet. I think the Bulls problems on defense, that are nothing new, are still glaring. Even with Theis and Brown Jr, who seem to want to play defense… even with Lavine playing a bit better on that side of the ball… the consistent effort isn’t there. Is it really effort, or do we just lack the talent on that side of the ball? I don’t know… thinking about the recent Thibs era… certainly there was talent there, but there was hustle… or should I say, heart, hustle, and muscle? Is this Bulls team lacking those qualities?

I don’t know… I’d hate to think that. It’s one thing if the talent isn’t there… I don’t know… I don’t know what to think; I’m fricking frustrated. Finishing off games has been another issue all year long. Although we played Minnesota evenly in the 4th quarter, the other 2 games… Atlanta outscored us 34-24, while Memphis beat us down 31-16. It’s like the better teams just flip a switch and turn it on in the 4th quarter, and the Bulls can’t keep up. It sucks.

Nobody was expecting an NBA title this year from the Bulls. Maybe most didn’t even expect playoffs… but I did. This was the step that I thought this team would take this year; I didn’t think that was so unrealistic. But hey… if we can still get in finishing in the 10th spot, then I guess hope is still alive??? Back up that truck boys…
