I take back everything positive I said about the Bulls… just kidding. However, Monday night’s game against the short-handed Nuggets, and yes, I know we don’t have Lauri either, was a good symbol of how far we’ve got to go. Don’t get me wrong; I feel that the Bulls are on the right path, a much, much better path than they’ve been on. I think Donovan is a great coach; the players are improving, and also playing hard. They didn’t give up on Monday night vs Denver at the UC, but at the end of the day, it was another loss. It really boiled down to one thing: they had no answers for Jokic.
It was very similar to the game against the 76ers with Embiid. I know both these guys are special players, and that they present problems for a lot of teams. But man, I mean, Jokic did whatever he wanted; he was scoring at will. Why didn’t we do something different there? Wendell, again not alone in this category, but he cannot guard them one on one. Maybe he thought he could; maybe he really wanted to. But it was pretty clear that he was overmatched, and yet, there were really no adjustments. Putting Thaddeus on him was NOT an adjustment. Double teaming him for one possession in the 4th quarter which lead to getting burned by a Murray three doesn’t count either. At that point, when he was going off in the 4th quarter, I don’t care who else shoots the ball; don’t let him beat you, period. Sure, would I like to cover Murray too? Yes, of course. So keep somebody on Murray, and send help from another defender to get the ball out of Jokic’s hands. It was like Donovan was being stubborn about it, and at the end of the day, it cost the Bulls the game.

The forced shots, the turnover, the things that we got used to from Lavine last year, poked its head out. He’s been better this year, a lot better; he still has some habits to break. When he was going to the hole, he was doing well; why stop that? Why do a turnaround, fadeaway three pointer? Why shoot one from 5 feet behind the line? How do you catch the ball on a called play after a timeout and travel late in the game? Just as with the Bulls, the same goes for Lavine. He has been playing great; his star is definitely on the rise. Yet, he too, has ways to go. I hope both the Bulls and Lavine will get there.
The Nuggets were missing some key guys too; I’d hate to see the result if they were 100%. The best thing about the game is that the Bulls played hard all the way through; they didn’t give up. On this day where Joakim Noah officially retired, there is certainly something to be said for playing hard, a la heart, hustle, and muscle; I can certainly appreciate that, and support that 100% as a fan. But you don’t get points in the standings for playing hard. The Bulls need to learn how to win these games. Donovan needs to be quicker with adjustments. Lavine needs to be smarter at the end of the game. Yes, the Bulls have brought the fun back this year, now it’s time to get the wins.
