He did say after the game that it was probably in the back of his head; how could it not be? Sitting on 399, every time he got the puck close to the net, I’m sure he was thinking this could be it; the longer it went on without scoring that historic goal, the more it would weigh. Thankfully, it didn’t last too long. On Sunday night at the UC, Patrick Kane scored his 400th career NHL goal.

It was a beauty too by the way. If you didn’t see it, definitely check it out. It was a 2 on 1 with DeBrincat, and Kane pulled the old curl and drag move as the defender slid by, before firing it into the short side of the net. It wasn’t one of those goals where you weren’t exactly sure it went in, kind of like his most famous goal of all time. Nah, not this one. He buried this sucker; we all saw it bounce off the back of the net. This was a no doubter, and now it’s official. Congrats Patrick!

Of course it was appropriate that this came in a Blackhawks victory. It wouldn’t have been that great had it come in a loss, like one of those late goals when the game was already decided the wrong way; there was no need to temper the excitement and celebration post-goal. The fact that it came against the Red Wings was pretty sweet too. After moving to the Eastern Conference to avoid playing the Blackhawks, the games against Detroit would be limited… until this COVID altered season; thanks COVID??? Yeah, this will be one that we won’t forget. The only bad thing was that the UC wasn’t packed to the rafters; thanks COVID. The place would have went absolutely nuts. I’m sure the Blackhawks will have something prepared to celebrate this both now, and when the fans return; they’re always pretty good for that stuff. Plenty of rain checks to cash in for all of us as far as celebrations that just weren’t the same due to the pandemic. As for the Hawks, outside of the 3rd period, they actually played better in the previous game, a loss to the Wings, but just as we had to take the L in that one, we’ll take the W here; that’s hockey baby!

With the 2 points, the Blackhawks sit at 28 for the season; one behind the teams tied for first place, the Lightning and the Panthers. Are the Blackhawks really this good? Well, I’m glad you asked, because we’re going to find out quickly. After 3 days off, the Blackhawks will play the Lightning 3 games in 4 days at the UC. Then after 2 against the Stars, will play their next 6 games against the Panthers (4) and Lightning (2). So 9 of the next 11 for those keeping track at home against the first place teams. Yeah, it’s going to get real, real quick.

As I’ve said all year, I’m happily surprised how the Hawks have done this year; guess it pays to have low expectations heading into the season. But now, after their success thus far, I want more; the expectations are a bit higher. Will this next string of games raise them even further, or will we be brought back down to earth? I’m excited to find out. With 88 leading the way, anything is possible. Go Hawks!!!
