December 30, 2020: See Yu

posted in: Cubs | 0

We knew the Cubs would be making some moves. We knew there would be guys here in 2020 that would not be here in 2021; some guys are already gone. Monday night the Cubs traded Yu Darvish. If there was one guy I thought we wouldn’t trade, it would have been Yu. We must have got a ton for him…

It didn’t start off too well for Yu in Chicago. I remember being pissed at him for a while. His performance was not close to his big contract, plus THIS is who we replaced Jake with? Starting at the All Star break in 2019, we saw a new Yu. Since then, he’s been one of the best pitchers in baseball. He certainly was our #1 in a starting pitching rotation that has more questions than answers. At least we had Yu to anchor it; now we don’t. I understand that changes had to be made; I looked forward to some of them. I don’t mind the concept of trading an older pitcher, making a lot of money, to cash in on the highest point of his Cubs career; certainly can get the most value for him right now. My question is, did we?

We won’t truly know that answer for a while, but first reaction is no. Kyle Davies is OK, and who doesn’t love prospects, but certainly thought another known commodity would have been included. Was this really the best package we could have got for him? I find that hard to believe. Because of this, it certainly feels like a salary dump, which signals a rebuilding vs the trendy “retooling”. I knew changes had to, and would be made; I didn’t know we would have to lose this much of the “right now” quality in the process. The Cubs didn’t get better today; they got worse. And now we wait for what’s next…

The Padres aren’t messing around. Talk about a good couple days for the Padres. Snagging Blake Snell then STILL going after and getting Yu Darvish. You just acquired two #1 starting pitchers which will go into a rotation that wasn’t too shabby to begin with. I know all eyes and criticism sits with the Cubs in this deal, but what about the Sox? Sure, they added Lance Lynn; he’s not as good as either of these guys. And you added 1 starting pitcher; the Padres went out and got 2! Obviously the Cubs have shifted modes at this point, but the Sox are in win now mode; are they doing all they can to put themselves in the best position?

Back to the Cubs… it’s hard to conceptualize a complete rebuild at this point only because of the talent on the roster. Baez, Bryant, Rizzo, Contreras… did we clear cap space to lock these guys up? Which one of these guys is next? And oh yeah, Caratini was included in this trade. I feel like we could have got value for him all by himself instead of a “throw-in” for a Darvish trade that wasn’t fair in the first place. It’s like not only drafting a guy that nobody was going to draft, but trading up to do so. Losing Yu is like letting two starting goalies walk with no good backup solution. Losing Yu leaves a huge hole in our rotation that wasn’t that great to begin with. I hope you didn’t bet the over for the Cubs win total already…

I know the talent on this roster hasn’t brought us ANOTHER World Series; we certainly should have had more than the magical one. Yet, we have franchise pieces in place. Maybe we’ll move some of these prospects to get some major league ready talent? Maybe (we better) sign some free agent starting pitching? The Cubs have to replace some of the wins we just traded away, unless we’re truly throwing this year away. Looking at our division, it certainly didn’t seem out of range; looking at the big picture in the majors, the Cubs weren’t on that top tier any more. Now we’re worse… Welcome to the rebuild?
