Let’s get it started… let’s get it started in here. The Bulls are back baby! The Bulls kicked off the regular season on Wednesday night… the first time in 9 months, and some may say longer, that they’ve played a meaningful game. I’ll tell you what: I’m actually excited about this season. I just know the Bulls are going to do better than they did last year… well, they better. But no, seriously, I’m thinking playoffs.
We were still on the road about 7pm right before the game tipped off. I like Chuck Swirsky, but when he was talking about the Bulls MAYBE having a chance to beat the Hawks, I got pissed off. The Hawks??? Who the hell are they??? I know they’re supposed to be improved this year as well, but they’re not the Warriors.. OK, they’re not the Nets… Heck yeah we have a chance to beat them, a good chance. Come on Chuck… I know you’re a positive guy, but this isn’t the same Bulls team. This is a new era. Yes, I know a lot of the same players return, but with a different coach, a competent coach, there will be more wins, no doubt in my mind. Well, I was really excited before our first preseason game too…
Yes, that first preseason game was ugly for the Bulls. This first regular season game was also ugly for the Bulls. My God, we stepped out of the car for 5 minutes, and the Bulls were down by double digits in the first quarter. By the time we made it home, the Bulls were down by 20+ and it wasn’t even halftime yet. What the heck happened?

I don’t think there is any way around it, the Bulls defense has to play better. That was flat out embarrassing, no matter how you cut it. This was the same theme in game one of the preseason, and the Bulls bounced back with a much better effort the next game, which resulted in a win. Since history repeated itself with the first game, here’s hoping history repeats itself in the second game.
What else went wrong? Well, there’s always a flip side to things, and yes, the Bulls were not shooting well. The Bulls are NOT a good 3 point shooting team; that does not change with a new coach. I know the NBA is all about the treys, but if the Bulls are going to decide to live and die by that shot this year, it may not turn out as well as I am expecting. Sure, there will be games when we’re making those shots, but we cannot rely on it. I don’t mind Wendell taking one here and there, but his ass needs to be inside. Coby had some memorable games from out there, but there were the stories that the previous coaching staff directed him out there, away from one of his strengths, the mid range jumper; this could change. If you like the mid range jumper Coby, take it. Zach also makes the impossible shot from time to time, and yes, if you have a wide open trey, take it, but don’t forget that you can get to the rim against almost everybody… do it… that’s your bread and butter. Lauri… you’re not just a spot up shooter that Boylen tried to make you. You can do it from anywhere on the court; do it… early and often.
So yes, it’s the same players, but with a coaching change, a philosophy change, this team can be a lot better this year, and certainly a lot better than this one game. Yes, ONE game… I know, I know… that first impression, but I’m not chalking this up to another crap season because of one game. In fact, if it’s going to happen, happen in the first game of the season; now we need to play better, a lot better. I look forward to seeing the next game. Go Bulls!
