December 12, 2020: Baby Bulls

The Bulls took the court Friday night at the UC for the first time in 9 months! Their last game, if anybody recalls, was a win over the Cavs 108-103 on March 10th. I was actually at their 2nd to last home game vs Indiana on March 6th. We had a work outing, our 2nd Bulls game as a group. We were looking forward to more. Little did we realize COVID would shut all that down, including the NBA season. Once the season resumed, it would be in a bubble, which did not include the Bulls. Rightfully so… the Bulls stunk. Since then, although there has not been one game on the court, the Bulls have been very busy. 9 months later, the new Bulls took the court.

I actually felt like the Bulls would come out and kick butt; I was wrong. The Bulls got stomped by the Rockets in the first preseason game of the year. Although the result was the same, I felt hope. It wasn’t the same old Bulls. I know this one was used before, and some of these guys have been around for a couple years, but I feel like this team has been born again; I feel like these guys are the baby Bulls. One of the brightest spots was the youngest of these Bulls, their first round draft pick 19 year old Patrick Williams. For a kid that was relatively unknown and surprised most when he was chosen #4 overall, he looked good, scoring 12 points in his first NBA action. Offensively, scoring over 100 points, the Bulls looked halfway decent. Not sure why Wendell was shooting all those treys. I don’t mind it as a complement to his game, but he should be down low in my opinion. More to come… The problem came defensively, which may be the biggest challenge this year for our boys.

Houston hit 24 treys… 46.2%. Obviously, the Bulls are going to have to defend the trey if they want to be successful this year. With everybody chucking them up, got to lock that down… quickly. For some reason, I know they’ll improve there. Maybe it’s because we have a competent coach. With the new coach, and new ownership in place, and still with a very young roster, there is renewed faith here in Chicago, and one preseason loss, is not going to derail that optimism.

The Bulls will get a second chance at this team on Sunday night; same time, same place. We’ll get to see how the Bulls respond from their first loss of the season. Normally, I don’t pay any attention to preseason. When I’ve waited so long for the Bulls to get back on the court, when there have been so many positive changes off the court, I can’t wait to see it translate to wins on the court. Whether or not it happens on Sunday night, there is one thing that is true; it feels like the Bulls are back. Yes, they haven’t done crap yet, but there is promise again… and that is a start. Go Bulls!
