December 20, 2014: Grizzle Me

posted in: Bulls | 1

Even some last minute Christmas shopping last night, could not stop me from watching Friday night’s Bulls contest.  Actually recording the game, and not checking the results, worked this time, as we watched half late last night, and the other half first thing this morning.  It was worth it.  The Bulls got a really nice victory.

Remember the Vancouver Grizzlies?  One guy that comes to mind is Bryant Reeves… I believe his nickname was Big Country.  Things didn’t quite work out up there in Vancouver, and now in Memphis, they have turned into a solid NBA team.  They were actually 12-1 at home heading into this contest with the Bulls.  I still couldn’t believe some of the guys they were rolling out there.  Tayshaun Prince?  I didn’t even know this guy was still in the NBA.  After watching him in this one, I don’t think he should be.  And how about who rolled off the bench… Vinsanity?!?  Another guy I thought was watching from his couch, came in and started chucking up some shots.  He actually made some, but I was still willing to let him shoot as many times as he wanted.  The guy who seems to always kill us is Beno Udrih.  Always coming off the bench, I remember him giving us fits in Milwaukee and Sacramento in the past.  I’d be willing to bet he averages more against us than any other team.

One of the marquee matchups going into this one, was brother against brother.  The Gasols went heads up in this one, and they pretty much neutralized each other.  That makes sense.  I remember playing against my brother was very tough.  Playing against someone you have played basketball with your whole life is not easy.  They know all your moves.  They know you better than almost any other defender.  They both played poorly in this one.  Thankfully, we didn’t need Pau; he’s been carrying us enough.

The bench stepped up large in this one, specifically, Nikola Mirotic and Aaron Brooks.  I was wondering the nickname Stacey was going to give Mirotic.  NEE KO LA was the obvious one, but no… he’s found another classic.  Niko Suave… it doesn’t get much better than that, and he played possibly his best NBA game last night.  I just knew he was going to be a bust when he finally got to the Bulls, but he’s been proving me wrong each and every game.  He WAS worth the wait.  And how about Aaron Brooks?  Sometimes he appears to be out of control, OK half the time, but he makes a lot of those shots!  He’s also a guy when he’s hot, he’s hot.  The Bulls have been lucky to have these type of guys, and we got another here.

The man of the night, again, was Jimmy Butler.  This guy is a legitimate All Star.  Who knew he’d be THIS good this year?  He’s always been a great defender.  I just love how he rips the ball out of guys’ hands.  Now, he’s turned into a great scorer.  He followed up a career high against the Knicks on Thursday, with another 30 point game in Memphis.  Oh, and he hit some big shots.  I was impressed with the one at the end of the 3rd quarter.  He’s constantly impressing this year.

The Bulls keep on playing at a high level even though they were not at full strength.  Missing McDermott, Taj, and DRose, didn’t matter.  McDermott had surgery, so he’ll be out for a minute.  I’m glad Taj is getting some rest; he needs it the way he’s played the past few years.  Get well Taj.  As far as DRose, an illness now?  I’m sure he is sick, and I’m sure it was smart to have him sit out, but it’s just more games he’s missing.  Each game he misses, Jimmy Butler steps up big time.  Jimmy Butler is becoming the go-to-guy on this team.  He’s playing at another level; a level that I hope DRose will be playing at before we play the games that REALLY count.

I think Drose will be ready.  I hope he will.  There’s a lot of season to go.  DRose remains the X factor on this team doing it all.  Jimmy and everybody else on this team is playing at a very high level.  We need #1 to get there too.  Get well Rose, and get back & stay on the court.  With an A game from Derrick, this Bulls team has nothing holding them back.
