Well, they played the game on Monday night in Cincinnati… I was thankful for that. Not sure what the plans will be going forward, and definitely want folks to stay healthy, but another Cubs game was a welcome sight. One with a rain delay that made me stay up late to watch them was a bonus. The fact that the Cubs almost blew this game, but still pulled it out… priceless.
The Cubs opened up a can in this one; they were crushing the Reds. Lester made his first start of the year; he was cruising. He turned in 5 no hit innings. I wondered if he kept this going how long Ross would keep him in; the question was answered immediately in the 6th inning. The bullpen was in, and… the bullpen made it interesting. It shouldn’t have been this close. Yet, we still held a 3 run lead heading into the bottom of the 9th inning. Craig Kimbrel would make his first appearance of the year.
They talk about his career ERA, yet I remember last year there were games he self-destructed. Yes, he did turn in some good games too, but when he was bad, he was really bad. This would fall into that really bad category. I mean, the Reds didn’t even get a single hit, yet pulled within 1 run and loaded the bases with 1 out thanks to 4 walks and a HBP; seriously Craig? I thought Rossy waited one batter too long to pull him, but let’s just say, I’m glad he pulled him. In comes Jeffress, and of course proceeds to go 3-2 to the first batter. Guy helped us out swinging at ball 4; whew… 1 out away. Of course, the final batter would be Joey Votto, or would he? Another 3-2 count… make him get a hit to beat us; that’s all I ask. After 4 walks and a HBP, seriously, just make them earn it. Votto took a good swing and hit a liner into center field. Fortunately, Almora was there, and this game was over.

No matter what the hell happened, it counts as a win in the standings, and for that, I’m thankful. What to do with Kimbrel? Well, we certainly can’t afford this bullshit. I’m glad Ross pulled him, and I trust him to manage this situation accordingly going forward. The fact that he is an ex-catcher, and has dealt with pitchers his whole life, makes me feel good. So far so good in my opinion. Sure, can’t hold him responsible for the crappy bullpen, which is a bit scary, but he has made some good moves thus far. Leaving Hendricks in, bringing Ryan in to stop the bleeding on Sunday, pulling Kimbrel in this one. Yes, he talked about Kimbrel being rusty, as he should, even if he doesn’t believe it. It would be nice if Craig contributed this year, yet, we can’t afford to wait for it. If he doesn’t have it, not sure how many more chances he’ll get, but Jeffress is next man up. He was good tonight, saving it for the boys.
Glad we pulled this out; glad we played this game. Looking for more… games and wins. Go Cubs!
