May 18, 2020: The FP Game

We had heard rumors about it; the story that it was food poisoning not the flu that MJ had before Game 5 of the 1997 NBA Finals. Kind of ironic that it was from pizza… MJ should have known better than that. Who the hell would eat a pizza in Utah, especially living in a city whose specialty is pizza? I certainly wouldn’t order a pizza in Utah. I was just watching a Diners Drive Ins and Dives; my son has been into shows on the Food Network lately. They were featuring this Nashville spot that has been around forever, serving pizza as one of their specialties. I’m sorry… I just can’t. Outside of Chicago and New York, I’m going to have to stray away from pizza; it just won’t compare. I had to do what I had to do living in LA for a while… found a couple spots to get us by, but Utah?!?! They did say it was the only place they could find that was open; I guess I could believe that.

Anyways, I’m not going to start calling The Flu Game by any other name. The Food Poisoning Game? The FP Game? Nah… let’s just leave it alone. This game turned out to be possibly my favorite game of all time; that’s saying something. I mean, I could probably call out at least 20 games off the top, but this one… man, this one was different.

I’ve mentioned in previous posts about the reports that would come out during the regular season about Jordan feeling under the weather. We’d hear about him missing practice, which probably was due to an all nighter and/or golf vs him not feeling good, but whatever… he was MJ; if Rodman deserved some rope, MJ deserved that and more. Whenever Jordan was supposed to not be feeling well, he would come out and be killing it; not much different than any other game. Was he sick? How sick was he? Who knows, but it didn’t matter; the Bulls would win and all would be good. There would be no wondering about how he was feeling in this Game 5…

Not sure if everybody could tell he was hurting, but certainly those of us who watched him play on a night in night out basis knew he wasn’t himself; this was no act. Whatever it may have been… flu, food poisoning, whatever… Jordan was in bad shape. What happened that game was nothing short of super-human like. I can’t ever remember him looking like THAT… and what he was able to do… on the biggest stage… on the road… in a critical Game 5… How many times does he have to prove to us what he’s about?

At that point, we had seen 12+ years of this; it’s not only what was shown during The Last Dance… it’s not only what you can see when you look up MJ highlights… it’s not only what you can see if/when you re-watch a playoff game. I’ve said this all along… Jordan brought it every single night! Unless you had some kind of package and were able to watch every regular season Bulls game, you don’t really know. Being able to see this first hand… sitting on the floor at my parents’ house or over at a friend’s house… we saw it all. We knew it, but even after all of that… to see what he did in this game, feeling like he did… he was the man, period. Time to re-watch the Flu Game…
