I’m coming around… I’m not all the way there yet. But certainly what has transpired in the days since the Bulls hired Artie has given indication that there really is a new boss in town. This is what we have been asking for.
My initial thought was this was all going to be BS. Sure, the Bulls would bring in somebody new, but behind the scenes, things will still be the same. As of today, there has been some clarity provided on the situation. Gar Forman has been relived of his duties. John Paxson will be moved into a senior advisor role and will not be involved in the day to day. Is that enough proof for me?
It’s a great start, I will say that. As first impressions go, Artie continues to impress. He’s made some decisive moves, adding two guys to the front office. He’s now removed GarPax from this equation. The GM decision appears to be next. Still, the one decision I wait for is the firing of Boylen. Although I think that should be academic, until it happens, I will hold off on popping the champagne. Still, with Gar being showed the door, and Paxson being told to stand down, I am feeling pretty good.

It was the two headed monster that we wanted to be rid of as Bulls fans. Did Artie keep Pax around for sentimental reasons? He said Pax would help his transition; he would help not hinder what he’s trying to do. Yet, Gar did not see eye to eye with this? Weird, but whatever. Gar is gone; that’s good. Pax is still around… like I said, I’m going to choose to remember Pax for the player he was for the Bulls, not for anything he’s done since then. I’m going to remember his gritty attitude as a player, hitting those clutch jump shots when we needed them. I’m not going to remember his arrogant “shit don’t stink” attitude he had as a GM. Should he have taken the downfall with Gar? Probably. The fact that he remains involved is a bit bothersome. If he truly stays out of the way, doesn’t have any decision making authority, and really helps Artie, then I’ll be OK. Then maybe, once the Bulls get good again, once they win again, maybe we can all welcome him back (and cheer for him) when the players’ type reunions happen down the road.
Go ahead and bring in the new GM next; make sure they are up to speed with things. Then let their first move be the firing of Boylen. Maybe as EVP (executive vice president) of the team, Artie doesn’t want to do the deed himself; it does make sense that the new GM weighs in on this… as long as the decision is to send Boylen packing. Keep checking those boxes… new GM, fire the coach, and hire a new coaching staff, all while assessing the roster. Roster decisions shouldn’t be made until the new GM and new coaching staff are both in place. Love what Artie is doing thus far; look forward to the next moves. Go Bulls!
