I can’t believe it’s been 10 years since that fateful Game 6 in Philly… The Blackhawks were on the brink; one win away from raising the Cup. They would have to win in Philadelphia, a place where they hadn’t won since 1996. I remember the game well…
My wife and I had been back in Chicago from Los Angeles for almost a year. I got to enjoy this ride by watching pretty much every game along the way. For this potentially historic occasion, I invited my father and brother over to our apartment. We would be moving out in about 3 weeks after finally deciding on a condo. We were pumped up. My dad of course was around for that last Stanley Cup; he would tell us stories about those old Blackhawk teams. For my brother and I, this would be the first. Let’s get it on!
Both teams traded power play goals in the first period from Byfuglien and Hartnell. The Flyers would take the lead in the 2nd period when Briere lit the lamp; that would last almost 2 minutes before Sharp tied it up. Late in the period Ladd deflected a Hjalmarsson shot for a 3-2 lead. I thought that’s how the game was going to end. The third period was a white knuckle ride. Niemi kept the puck out of the net most of the period. There were five minutes left; we could taste it. Then the other guy that I grew to hate in this series Scott Hartnell tied up the game with just over 4 minutes to play. I punched the couch. I was so pissed. We were this close… We almost lost it soon after that. I had to remember that even if we did lose this one, the series would not be over; the Blackhawks would get another chance at home in a winner take all Game 7. The game went to overtime.

I mean, there would be no more chances for the Flyers to tie it up; we wouldn’t have to temper our celebration… we could go nuts if and when the Blackhawks scored. It would be a “walk off” goal. It didn’t quite work out that way. It took a little more than 4 minutes before Kane shot a sharp angle shot on net. As he continued skating around the net, he threw his equipment down… the announcers didn’t know what was going on; neither did we. He skated down the ice… yes, in celebration… did he just score the Stanley Cup winning goal? It’s funny to read about that night, and what the Blackhawks themselves thought… everybody believing Kane, yet keeping one eye on the referee for the official signal. When they flashed the replay, it was pretty clear that the puck went in… still, before we went nuts, it would be nice to know from the only person’s opinion that counts. The referee signaled good goal, and it was official.
Toews would be awarded his MVP trophy; he had the most points in the playoffs for the Blackhawks. Then, since he was the team captain, he was given the Cup… Hello Stanley! Once he skated with it for a few seconds, it was handed off to the guy who had come up one series short the past 2 years; Big Hoss Marion Hossa. It was surreal watching the celebration; the Blackhawks had done it. Looking back after all these years, Game 6 really was a magic game for us. 15-1 under Coach Q in Game 6s, including 8-0 on the road?!?! That’s wild. As for the celebration… that would turn out to be pretty wild too. Come on back home boys to get your hero’s welcome…
