I haven’t seen much about this… how the NBA will pick up after the season resumes… if the season resumes; I haven’t been looking either. I’m sure there are plenty of opinions already out there; here’s mine.
For this exercise, we’ll assume the NBA season will resume on June 1st, typically around the time when the Finals is beginning. The regular season is over, period. Teams have played about 75% of their games; most of the playoff spots are decided. The difference between the 8th seed and the 9th seed in the East is 5.5 games. Now if you think the Wizards are going to go on some sort of streak… I have a car to sell you. That would be like me thinking the Bulls were going to climb their 8 games out of the playoffs and hop 2 teams to make it; it ain’t gonna happen. It’s a little closer out West. There are 4 teams within 4 games of the 8th seed; maybe you feel bad about that. OK, let’s try this. Since the difference between the 7 and 8 seeds is 7 games, then let’s have a play in series for the 8th seed out West. You pit the 4 teams within 4 games against each other; the winner of those games will play the current 8 seed Memphis. The last team standing is the 8 seed out West. Easy enough right?
The playoffs begin and take about 2 months to complete; you could even squeeze that timeframe a little. You can make the first couple rounds 5 games instead of 7, OR what I would prefer, just eliminate some of the off days between games; it’s gotten quite ridiculous. Cut some of the off days, and the playoffs can be complete within 6 weeks. So mid-July and the season is over. What about the draft positions for those teams that did not make the playoffs? Glad you asked. Take the 14 teams that did NOT make the playoffs and set up a “loser’s bracket”. The winner of the loser bracket is put in the #1 position; the runner up is put in the #2 position. Tanking teams be damned! Let the losers fight it out to get that top pick; I really like that idea. Plus, you get more basketball, which is good for everybody. Have the playoffs and the loser’s bracket alternate days, kind of like the NCAA and the NIT tourneys. It works great.

Easy. Cut the preseason from 3 weeks to 1 week. Leave the season 82 games, and I’m sorry, but cut the off days again. Load management be damned! They’re big boys… they get paid a lot of money… suck it up. And oh yeah, they’ll still rest guys, so what does it really matter? Problem solved.
Of course, this all depends on what that return date will be. If they need to play games without fans in attendance, then so be it. You’re going to tell me all of us sports deprived people won’t be tuning into some live action? Heck yeah… even if the Bulls aren’t in it. I’ll take any live sports at this time… although it sure is fun to watch all these throwback games that they’re showing. That will help us get through it. We will get through it… sooner than later… hopefully.
