The Olympics were over. The Blackhawks avoided injury. Now it’s time to get back to the regular season and continue our march to the playoffs.
Speaking of March… the Blackhawks returned to regular season play and turned in a losing record for the month. 6-7-2 ain’t that bad… But it was definitely the low point of the entire year, compared to how great the Blackhawks were in every other month. We saw some interesting goalie action during the month. It was the first start by some kid named Crawford in goal. It was the last start by Huet in goal. It was the complete takeover in goal by Niemi. Crawford made his one and only start of the year on St Patrick’s Day, a 4-2 loss at Anaheim. He played in 2 games during the 2005-2006 season and 5 games in 2007-2008; check the memory banks on those. Of course he would go on to play 440 more regular season games and 86 playoff games for the Hawks. He helped lead us to 2 Stanley Cups, but back in 2010, his contribution was this one single game. Huet on the other hand, was on his way out, making his last start on March 25th, an 8-3 loss at Columbus. This game would be the final of his 89 games played for the Blackhawks; thanks Cristobal. Then there’s Niemi… He would take over on March 28th and start the remaining 9 regular season games and all 22 playoff games. He would finish the regular season at 6-2-1. The Blackhawks shook off their subpar March to go 5-0-1 in the final month of the regular season. Heating up at the right time? Maybe…

Of course, we’re talking about Patrick Kane, Duncan Keith, and Jonathan Toews. They finished 1-2-3 in regular season scoring for this team, with 88 (yep!), 69, & 68 respectively. Duncan Keith was one of the elder statesmen of this time, even then. The longest tenured member of this team, since 2002, Duncan was voted the best defensemen of the year for his performance this year. Many of us “fans” have a short memory when we look at how “slow” Keith and his partner back in 2010 are today. Between Keith and Seabrook, the Blackhawks had a most impressive defensive pairing; these guys locked it down. Then of course there is the other dynamic duo with Kane and Toews. The drafting of these 2 guys changed the direction of the franchise. They would be at the heart of the turnaround… I remember when the Blackhawks named Jonathan Toews captain in his 2nd year, the 3rd youngest team captain in NHL history… Was it too much for a young guy to handle? He has certainly proved the opposite. While Kane has had his off the ice “issues”, Toews has remained the model of consistency on and off the ice. Again, I can’t believe the “fans” that dog him nowadays… Do you not remember what Captain Serious has accomplished here?
The regular season was over. At 52-22-8, and 112 points, this season still stands as the best Blackhawks regular season of all-time. The players were in place. The playoff loss from last year still fresh on the mind. Is this finally the year? Will this be the first Stanley Cup in 49 years? Will this be the first Stanley Cup in my lifetime? Let the playoffs begin… Hello Nashville…
