November 2009 was an interesting month for the Blackhawks. It started with a loss and a shootout loss and ended with the same. In between, the Hawks would go on an 8 game winning streak; this would be their longest winning streak of the season. It started with 4 in a row at home, their only home games of the month, and continued with the famous Circus Trip as they headed westward through Canada. On this trip, they would have their largest goal output of the regular season, twice, with 7 goals in Calgary and San Jose; they would also score 7 goals in two postseason games. Let’s take a closer look.
In the 7 goal outburst against the Flames, goals would come from Brouwer, Versteeg (2), Byfuglien, Ladd, Kane, and Eager. The Sharks game would start with 7 unanswered goals by the Hawks from Brouwer, Hossa, Sharp, Byfuglien, Seabrook, Hossa again, and Madden; love all these guys! I remember this Sharks game, mostly because of Hossa’s first goal as a member of the Blackhawks.. it was a short handed tally, one of three on the night. Our prized free agent signing… 12 year 63 million dollar free agent signing Marian Hossa would end up with 24 of them on the season. Hossa has to rank as one of the best , if not THE best, free agent signing by a Chicago sports team. I miss Hossa.
Hossa was on the Penguins two years before when they lost to the Red Wings in the Stanley Cup Final in 2008. He ended up on the losing side again the following year when he switched sides, and still lost, when the Penguins beat Hossa and the Red Wings. Cursed? Nah. Third time’s a charm? Yeah. Like Niemi, Hossa played a major role in the championship run. He was the ultimate puck possessor on a team that specialized in it. His big body, long reach, and steady stick kept defenders at bay. His back checking was educational for anyone wanting to up their game on the defensive side. He may have not been the most vocal guy, but his example was certainly one worth following. His eventual departure from the Blackhawks and subsequent retirement sucked. The Hawks miss Hossa.

He led the NHL that year with 5 short handed goals. His prowess on the penalty kill was just another impressive part of his game. The Blackhawks would finish 4th overall on the penalty kill that year. We used to be really good at that; having Hossa out there helped tremendously. We were only 16th on the power play that year; even in our hey day we weren’t that great on the PP huh?
Those eight November wins would help us finish 8-2-2 in the month of November. At 16-6-3, the Blackhawks were on hot pace. As the weather got colder in Chicago, would they keep it up?
