February 17, 2020: End of the Road

posted in: Blackhawks | 0

Well, that was fun… not! The Blackhawks ended their road trip with another loss in Winnipeg. Remember when we talked about how this road trip would be season defining; well, let’s hope we were wrong. Because if that was truly the case, we’re looking at the end of the road for the Blackhawks 2019-2020 season.

1-4 in their Canadian swing. 2-7 since the All Star Break. 6 points in 9 games. Any way you cut it, it ain’t good. 8 points out of the final Wild Card spot with 23 games to play. Sure, are we still mathematically alive? Sure, could we maybe make a run and get ourselves back in it? All the mojo I felt going into this trip, coming out of the break, is gone. Maybe now is when the Hawks will start playing good again.

It’s not like they played horrible in every game. The game in Vancouver we played our asses off to no avail. That happens sometimes though, and when your back is against the wall, those games that are bound to happen always come at the wrong time. This last loss in Winnipeg was particularly painful. A first period lead gone in the second period, before Kane tied it up late. That was a huge goal at the time. Yet, once the teams returned to the ice for the start of the third period, one team forgot to show up. Winnipeg immediately scored after sustained pressure against Crawford. The Blackhawks couldn’t muster anything the entire period. Game, set, match, season?

The schedule doesn’t get any easier. Visits to Dallas, St. Louis, Tampa Bay, and Florida follow our 2 game home stand vs the Rangers and the Predators. When is the trade deadline again? I’m just hoping that the season continues to go as it has gone. When my hopes have been high, the Blackhawks dash them. When my hopes have been low, the Blackhawks made a push. Time to make a push boys.

For all the talk about the great goaltending, guess how many shutouts we’ve had this year. One, that’s it. Crawford shut out the Stars back in November. It would have been nice if one or both of our guys could have stood on their heads in any of this latest string of games. I know, they haven’t played bad, and I know our defense does them no favors, which probably is the biggest problem with this team, but still… Pitch a shut out and you’re guaranteed a win. So speaking of that trade deadline… we got a taker for Crawford yet? In the same breath, are we going to be able to work out a deal with Lehner? Two great goalies does not appear to be enough to get us there this season…

OK, not throwing in the towel completely, but man, this road trip sucked. I’ll still keep hope as long as mathematically justified, but even I am almost on E in that department. How many days until baseball starts?
