February 10, 2020: QB Options

Still maybe a little bit too soon to talk about the Bears. I probably need more time… still pissed about the way the season went. With such high hopes, the fall was that much harder. Sometimes we’re just a year off on things… I hope that’s the case with our Bears.

The QB was the most talked about position, and the trials and tribulations of Mitch Trubisky. There’s no shortage of national media, local media, and Bears fans everywhere, ready to write him off for good. After the way this year went, I can’t blame them. Yet, I can make a decision on my own. He didn’t have a good year; that’s an understatement. He started off badly, but then he got hurt. I don’t want to use the injury as an excuse; who do I look like, John Paxson? Yet, the injury did happen. And do you remember what happened the first game he was brought back? I do. Nagy had him throw like 50 something times; not exactly setting up your young (he’s still young) QB to succeed. After he came back, he had his moments… good ones I mean. Of course, this was mostly against horrible competition; the Cowboys weren’t that horrible, right? Lions, Giants… I’ll give you them. But at that point, we were already behind the 8 ball as a team; the Bears needed to be almost perfect down the stretch to rebound from the tough start and make the postseason. Was Mitch pressing a bit? Ok, no more excuses.

Unfortunately, there’s no reset button for a season. Fortunately, there is the reset button for a new season. I’m looking forward to what the Bears and Trubisky can do next year. However, we cannot put all our eggs in one basket with Mitch. We need another QB in the fold that would be able to step in and lead us if need be. We cannot waste another year with a QB who can’t cut it. I’m OK with Mitch starting the season at QB, but I think the understanding needs to be there, that if he can’t get the job done, a change will be made. We can’t keep banging our head against a wall with Mitch; if he comes out with another bad start to the season, we need to make the switch. Now we need someone to switch to…

I’m not ready to give another QB a big contract. I don’t think we’re there yet. I don’t mind drafting another QB later in the draft; not trading Mack to move up. Tom Brady isn’t going anywhere; don’t fool yourself. The two guys I think about, and I believe I have mentioned this before, are Rivers and Alex Smith. The “problem” with Rivers is that if he’s brought in, does that mean he’s the starter? Yes, I think it does. Would that be the worst thing in the world? With Smith, that wouldn’t be an issue. If healthy, here’s a guy who’s familiar with Nagy’s offense, and has played a whole hell of a lot more meaningful snaps than Chase. If healthy, HE is the perfect guy for the Bears to bring into the fold.

The NFL season just ended; the Bears season has been over a lot longer. Definitely ready for baseball. Still hoping for something with the Blackhawks… not the Bulls. Although I won’t be as excited about the start of next season, I’m still looking forward to it. I still think “our window” is still open with this team. It doesn’t have to be Mitch or bust. With all the attention the Bears put on the kicking position this offseason, I surely hope they can put that much on the most important position in the game. Get the QB options lined up; be ready for whatever way this thing breaks. No excuses. Bear Down!
