My son likes different players in the NBA; I try to steer him away from certain ones… sorry, not sorry. One of the young guys that he likes that I like too is Zion Williamson. The Pelicans would make a visit to the United Center this Thursday night. Of course, I wanted to take him… but it was a school night. We try not to keep him up late during the week. But after a reminder email from his school this past weekend, we remembered that he was off this Friday; the search was on.
The tickets were higher than normal. Yes, even though the Bulls suck, people still show up; they don’t show up as much as the past couple years, but we still go. Unfortunately nowadays, the opponent impacts the attendance more than ever. With Zion making his only visit of the regular season (we did play them in the preseason), we were going to have to pay a little more than I’d like. I stopped looking. After all, I did have a meeting that night as well. But then I got a text message, and like that, 2 free tickets appeared. I of course accepted, and was very appreciative. With my wife graciously taking my spot in the meeting, it was back on.
It was throwback night to the 1988 Dunk Contest that featured Dominque and MJ in the Chicago Stadium. I’ve probably only watched highlights of this contest 50 times; my son has probably seen it 20 times already. Still, to have them show the highlights on the big screen in the UC was worth the price of admission; oh yeah, these were free. Still, it was better than anything going on down on the court. Zion did bull his way to about 20 points; he had one nice dunk. The Bulls on the other hand, sucked as normal. It’s pretty pathetic. I know, the injuries have piled up now; the excuse is in place. But they sucked before all the injuries; it’s just worse now.

As we started making our way downstairs to hopefully get a picture with Stacey King, he started hitting shots. As we waited in the entrance to the 100 level, we watched him continue to hit shots. Whoever was left in the crowd, which wasn’t much, kind of reminding me of a late night Cubs game in Wrigley in April, when the Cubs were losing big but trying to make a comeback, started chanting MVP, MVP. Yes, we didn’t have much to cheer about this night, and were going to take full advantage. 15 points in 5 minutes!!! It was unbelievable. The Bulls had pulled within 4 points with about 8 seconds left. Still kind of out of reach, but if they missed the free throw, let’s give it a shot. They missed it! But wait… Felicio tipped it for them. I watched him on this night, and saw him multiple times, just stand there and look at the ball instead of moving a couple feet to grab it… and now this. He may very well be the worst player in the NBA, but yeah, the Bulls gave him a big contract paying him millions. I want to laugh about it…
Still, it was another fun night at the UC with my boy; that is most important. THAT is more of a good reason than anything to go to the game. We didn’t get that pic with Stacey, but did get one with Kendall Gill. I bought him an $8 Michael Jordan keychain. We got some ice cream. We ripped up our Dunkin Donuts cards when Cuppy Coffee didn’t win. Then we drove home, and he fell asleep in the car. I hope one day he’ll cherish these memories as much as I do. Hopefully one day the Bulls will be good again too…
