January 31, 2020: The Last Game

posted in: Bears | 0

On this last day of January, let’s talk about the last game of the year. The Super Bowl is almost here. I’m excited about this game. When it comes down to it, I’m OK with the result either way. But… I have to pick a team. Let’s dig in.

Papa Vegas has the Chiefs as a 1 point favorite. I think that is a very good line. From talking to folks over the past 2 weeks, the majority of people are on the Chiefs; it’s hard not to be after their impressive comebacks the first 2 rounds of the playoffs. Thus, my initial lean is the Niners. In this biggest fixed game of the year, Papa is not going to lose. Still, I’m a bit hesitant… really for one big reason: Mahomes. He is the X factor. If he pulls a few plays out of his ass in this game, which he makes a habit of doing, the Chiefs have a good chance of winning this game. If he can be kept at a normal level by this Niners defense, then I think the Niners have a good chance at winning. I know, rocket science here…

I’m just glad the Packers got their ass kicked and were exposed for the frauds they were this year. OK, I had to get that out of the system one more time. But for this ass kicking, this Niners team has a special place in my heart. There are other things I like about the Niners. Let’s start with Robbie Gould; how cool would it be for him to win a Super Bowl? Game winning kick anyone? One of my buddies is a big 49er fan; I’d like them to win it for him. I don’t really dislike anybody on this team; I always like a good defensive team. I like the way Shanahan ran the ball at will last week; throwing whatever “balanced” approach out the window. If something is working, keep doing it; ahem, hope Matt Nagy took notes. What about sticking it to New England? Seeing Jimmy G (Eastern Illinois represent), the guy the Pats gave away to keep Brady, win one; that feels nice. Yet, there is some old stuff that lingers with the Niners. The one place I hold grudges is with my Chicago sports teams. Thus, I have had a reason to hate almost every team at one time or another; the Niners are part of this, but for good reason. The 1984 NFC Championship game where the 49ers kicked the Bears ass; this was one of the first games I remember… ever. Yet, this loss did propel us to the magical year in 1985. What about 1988? We met again in the NFC Championship, and got crushed, this time on frozen Soldier Field; that one stung. 1994 in the divisional round at San Fran… crushed… again. For some reason that one doesn’t ring so painful to me. Yet, 0-3 all time vs the Niners in the playoffs doesn’t make me feel so good…

That brings us to the Chiefs. Here is one team I can honestly say I don’t have any ill will towards. Whenever my son and I rank our NFL teams, from 2-32 after the Bears at 1, the Chiefs are always near the top for me. I used to love some of the old Chiefs teams. The big bruising backs Okoye and Word, the awesome secondary of Deron Cherry and Albert Lewis, another legend gone too soon in Derrick Thomas. Arrowhead also seems like a very cool place to play. There are really no bad memories vs the Chiefs; not counting this year’s loss. Somebody correct me if I’m wrong here, but outside of looking back game by game, nothing sticks out. Plus, I like Andy Reid; it would be great to see him win a Super Bowl. I could go to the whole Tyreek Hill thing; the Chiefs dismissed Hunt, but kept him after what he did to his family. OK, that’s kind of shitty. The one guy that I’m kind of tired of already on this Chiefs team is Patrick Mahomes. I know, I know, he’s just started off and hasn’t won anything yet. He’s a great talent, seems like a pretty good guy, yada yada. But for us Bears fans, we’ve had to hear his name more than normal over the past couple years. The constant comparison between Mahomes, Watson, and Trubisky, doesn’t make me feel too good. I’m sick of hearing it honestly. Yeah, we weren’t the only team who passed on Mahomes; every team has passed on some great player over the years. But this great? Yeah, it hurts OK. This would be the only reason I do not want to see the Chiefs win.

So where does this leave us? It leaves me rooting for the Super Bowl squares that I have going… it’s a toss up. So, I had to “break the tie”. I made a small wager on the Niners, and there it is. Now, it becomes a no-brainer.

Final Score prediction: San Francisco 26 Kansas City 24

It’s going to be a good one, either way, although somebody told me they felt a blowout coming; I couldn’t even tell you which way on that theory. I see this being a close game from start to finish. Enjoy one of the best days of the year!
