January 9, 2020: Bad Gets Badder

posted in: Bulls | 0

The Bulls have had a rough go at it, especially lately. While I don’t understand many of their losses earlier in the season, this particular stretch of the Bucks, Celtics, Jazz, and Mavericks is understandable. They are all simply better teams. They are all in the top half of the league, while it’s quite obvious where the Bulls sit. Wednesday night’s game in New Orleans would be our chance to get back on track, playing a team with a very similar record.

Welp; that didn’t quite work out the way I thought it would. When I first checked on the score, it was tied at the half. I would be home shortly, to hopefully watch the Bulls get the W. I should have remembered how well the Bulls play in the 2nd half of games, especially the 3rd quarter. By the time I turned on the TV, the Pelicans were killing us. What the heck happened? The bad gets badder…

I’m not going to re-watch the game. I’m not going to watch any “highlights”. I did see plenty of stuff while vegging out late night on Twitter; that’s always fun. I really didn’t want to even read anything about the game, but I couldn’t help myself. When will this misery end? Do you really think the Bulls can pull out a victory on Friday night at home against the Pacers?

Friday’s game could go either way. Let me save you the suspense, and just give you a quick preview: Bulls come out, take a lead, double digits even, and maintain a lead at the half. Bulls come out 2nd half, and let the Pacers tie the game, and eventually pull ahead, losing another game. It’s like we’re stuck on a vicious loop. But more than just the outcome of the next game, when will this misery end… when will the Bulls put it all together again, because Humpty Dumpty has not recovered from his fall yet.

I think of Humpty Dumpty when I look at Jim Boylen; I know that’s not nice. It’s just hard for me to respect this guy as a coach. I keep going around and around about the Bulls issues. I keep thinking we have a decent amount of talent. I keep wondering why we can’t put it all together. Is it just a hump that the players have to get over? Who is helping the players get over that hump? It keeps coming back to the coach.

I know at the end of the day it’s on the players. Maybe we just don’t have enough talent there. We don’t have a number one. Although Zach is our number one, I would classify him as a 2… and on a good day, Lauri a 3. But we do not have THAT guy. We had THAT guy in my opinion, and traded him, but what do I know. Now we need a #1… they just don’t grow on trees. Is it just a hopeless case until we get THAT guy?

I still think we can be better; the coach has to be good for something right? He won’t be THE reason we win, but he needs to be part of the reason. A good coach can mean X more wins for a team; what is our coach’s contribution? Or in baseball terms, what is Boylen’s WAR? I wonder if we just played without a coach; how much better or worse would we be?

OK, I could go on, down this bottomless pit. One win, just one… would help stop the bleeding, and pull us back out of this hole… a little bit. It’s going to take a lot more to get us on even land, let alone to the top of the mountain. I guess I should just shut up and be happy with our 6… Go Bulls!
