January 7, 2020: Crowning

posted in: Bulls | 0

The Bulls dropped their 4th straight on Monday night in Dallas. They remain winless in 2020, and have hit a season low 11 games under 500. These recent losses have come against some pretty good teams. The Bucks, Celtics, Jazz and Mavericks all took a piece of the Bulls ass. This is why you beat the teams you should beat. Although not expected to win any of them, it just adds to the disappointment that is the Bulls season.

There was a bit of excitement on this evening. The Bulls pre and post game shows were held at my old neighborhood bar; that was funny. Little old hole in the wall gets a moment of glory. For those movie buffs, this bar is located on the same block where Kevin Costner lived in the Untouchables. Yeah, plenty of memories in that place. Seeing it on TV was a trip, with the makeshift studio taking up the area where the free pool table used to reside. Anyways, they were falling over themselves about this Doncic kid. Man are we quick to crown today’s players. Nothing against the kid’s game; he’s definitely got game. But he’s just a kid… What has he played? 100 something games? I’m not looking it up. I’m not looking up his triple double numbers either, which still mean something, but seem watered down too in today’s NBA, full of no defense playing, drive and kick stat chasers. They were saying he’s better than Bird. Now I didn’t see a ton of prime Bird, but it sure seems like a stretch to put this kid in his league. Give it five, ten years. Let’s see him win something. Maybe he will be that good, but already? Enough of this premature crowning…

Sure, he lit up the Bulls on this evening, but that’s not saying much. Carlisle was saying stuff after the game…the Bulls are one of the hardest playing teams in the NBA. Speaking about crowning…Is there a trophy for that? Hey, I’m all for great effort; I still wish for the hard hat lunch pail days under Thibs. Maybe this is why I continue to tune in… Maybe all this effort will eventually amount to something. If the effort is really there, which I think Carlisle exaggerated a bit, then what is the issue? Talent? Experience? Coaching? All of the above?

Not sure. I did see videos of injured Otto Porter Jr partying in a club; I thought his foot was hurt? I did hear Zach Lavine after he said he’s focused on wins and losses, talk about wanting to be invited to the 3 point shootout, while saying he’s still got some dunks up his sleeve, appearing to suggest he wants to be in both. I say neither. 3 point shooting is not his game; he’s only 2 years from an ACL injury. Let’s really worry about the wins and losses. It would be great to have the Bulls represented in all star weekend in Chicago, but the fact is, there’s nobody deserving of it. That’s sad to say.

But that’s where we’re at. It’s not a good place, yet I’ll still be waiting and hoping for that first 2020 victory. Wednesday night in New Orleans is our next chance. Go Bulls.
