January 3, 2020: Firing Squad

After a disappointing 8-8 season, surely change is welcome. How much change is required? What types of change are needed? I’m sure we all have our opinions. The Bears kicked off the offseason by calling out the firing squad, letting go of 4 coaches on the offense side of the ball. Good start?

OK, the offense was definitely the biggest problem this year; there are many layers to that statement. From the play calling, the QB, the OL, the TEs, RBs, and WRs not named Allen Robinson, there’s a lot to improve. The Bears started with the play calling by firing Offensive Coordinator Mark Helfrich. Good! Wait, what? I thought Nagy was calling the plays? That is correct. So what exactly was the job of Mark Helfrich then if he’s not calling the plays? Assuming he worked closely with Nagy as they designed the offensive plan each week; I wonder how those sessions went. Nagy, the offensive “genius”, working with another offensive mind in Helfrich… well, I’m not ready to give up on Nagy yet, so if somebody’s got to go, I guess Helfrich is as good a place to start as any…

Moving on to OL coach Harry Hiestand. He was touted as an absolutely great hire by the Bears last offseason. I guess this living up to expectations thing was failed across the board. It’s kind of a ripple effect though, where one component of the offense impacts all other components. What is the core of the problem on offense? The offensive line certainly took a step back this year, which was very surprising to me. Yet, as I’ve mentioned, being one of the lowest paid OLs in the league isn’t helping matters. Maybe an investment in the offensive line this offseason would be prudent. There will be a different coach for whoever shows up on the OL next season, and that man has already been named: Juan Castillo. Good luck Juan!

The next lucky soul was Kevin Gilbride; hey didn’t he punch somebody on the sidelines back in the day? After a quick search, he actually got punched on the Houston Oilers sideline in 1993… by Buddy Ryan!!! Haha… Oh well, maybe he deserved that one, but hard to believe he deserved this fate. He didn’t sign Trey Burton who has done jack since he’s been here. He didn’t try to look like a genius and draft Adam Shaheen rounds earlier than projected only to watch him become a big time bust. Take the top 2 TEs out of the mix and you try to succeed… with our QB, and our OL…

Finally, assistant Special Teams coach Brock Olivo was jettisoned out of town. Hard to believe an assistant special teams coach has any great impact one way or another. Our special teams was halfway decent this year too. Oh well, maybe somebody’s friend needs a job…

I welcome the change; I just don’t know if it’s the right change… I definitely know it’s not enough. But hey, it’s only the 3rd day of 2020; let’s give them a chance. I like that they’ve acted swiftly. I like how they’ve restructured Kyle Fuller’s contract; I thought they did the same with somebody else too… Anyways, the Bears need to be active this offseason; hopefully this is only scratching the surface. Bear Down!
