For the 3rd day of Christmas, let’s stick with baseball. 2019 was a year for both sides of town that did not live up to expectations; seems like an overall theme for 2019 Chicago sports. The Cubs still haven’t taken advantage of their open window by winning another World Series after 2016, while the Sox haven’t sniffed the playoffs all decade long. Yet, their window time may finally just be starting…
Is the Cubs window closed? No, hell no. The team is still loaded with talent, for now. All that crazy talk about trading KB… good God I hope not. Our pitching was solid in 2019, although depending on what week(s)’ worth of stats you were talking about, the bullpen could have been at the bottom of the league. They did have their good moments too. The starters were solid, but not spectacular. The hitting was inconsistent. Was management part of the problem? The boys in the front office thought it was; we’ll get to that. This year was different than the previous 4 years because the Cubs didn’t even make the postseason. You see how I said that? Like, it’s become an expectation for the Cubs to make the postseason. Most parts of my life that would have been a punchline. Today, it’s a serious statement. I like that we are here now for the Cubs; I don’t like that we haven’t capitalized on our sustained success, although 2016 happened… and I thought that would never happen. It’s hard to be TOO mad about the Cubs because of that, but I still am. Maybe next year… now that sounds familiar.

Honestly, I thought they would be a lot better than they were this year. Did they take a step backwards? No. Actually, they were 10 games better than 2018. Honestly, I didn’t realize that. I don’t follow them nearly as closely as my team; that was actually decent progress. OK, so let’s change the narrative, and say that they DID live up to 2019 expectations; in 2020 the bar will be raised. Will we be talking about the Sox the same way we’re talking about the Cubs when it comes to postseason expectations? Sox fans hate comparing anything Sox with anything Cubs… Yet, certainly if the Sox don’t make the playoffs in 2020, it will be a disappointment, especially considering the state of the AL Central. Will the Twins top them yet again? It’s the Sox turn to crash through that window and join the Cubs as teams who will be in the mix each and every year.
After all, with 2 Chicago baseball teams, one would have thought we’d have many more World Series championships in this city than others; one would be wrong. After another year in 2019 of adding no more baseball titles, we sit with the same number on each side of town. On the 3rd day of Christmas, Santa brought to us, the same three old baseball trophies…
