November 29, 2019: Getting Blazed

posted in: Bulls | 0

No, I’m not talking about what I did last weekend, or what the whole city will be doing on January 1st. I’m talking about the Portland Trailblazers and what they did to the Bulls; I couldn’t resist the title. But if the shoe fits… the Bulls were certainly busy getting blazed by Portland this week, and before I can move on to happier times for our Bulls, I’d like to talk about the Portland games.

Thankfully, I didn’t watch much of the game at the UC. I knew what was going to happen, and it did. The thing that I didn’t think was going to happen was that the crowd would be chanting Melo’s name. That shit is embarrassing. Really? This washed up superstar who was traded to the Bulls for a minute made his comeback this year with Portland. The thing about it, he killed the Bulls in these 2 games; I’m shocked. But whatever… good for him. But to chant his name? Yes, that must be a sign of the times around these parts. Cheering for washed up superstars playing for the opposing team in your own arena? Never that. Maybe on a retirement tour, maybe I give an ovation to a guy, but come on… I can understand it more with DRose, although I still think it’s way too much. But Carmelo? Hey, what have you done for me lately… I guess I should be cheering him on too. He did win me some money in the brackets back in the Syracuse days.

I did see the game in Portland, and yeah, I saw with my own eyes how he played; it was a lot better than I expected. But in the NBA nowadays, even a washed up superstar can make his bones against this non defensive, drive and kick era. Like I said, good for him. The Bulls actually held their own in this one. Down the stretch, I thought they played some really good basketball. They closed to within two points before Whiteside put back Lillard’s miss. Tough way to go out; kind of reminded me of how Michigan eliminated Illinois all those years ago in the Final Four with that Higgins putback. Is my memory serving me correctly?

Anyways, we always have a tough time with Portland, even in the glory days. Yet, I’m glad Stacey didn’t miss an opportunity to remind the viewers that we beat them when it counted. Yes, 1992… I remember it fondly. Clyde vs MJ? Ha! No comparison. They did play us well, and had us on the ropes in Game 6 in the Stadium, but one comeback later, and the 2nd trophy was lifted. I’m proud to say I was there in person for that game; best game I ever attended in person.

Unfortunately, lifting that 7th trophy is going to have to wait, yet another year. I’m certainly thankful for the first 6, and feel bad for folks that weren’t around to see it. Hopefully the Bulls can bring another one home in our lifetime; it sounds like a long time, but hey, let’s not put anything past a GarPax managed team. Go Bulls!
