OK, yeah, I’m writing about the White Sox. It’s hard not to after the first big signing of the offseason, with all due respect to Will Smith to the Braves, was done by the Sox, grabbing Yasmani Grandal for 4 years & 73 million dollars.
At first, that seemed like a lot of money; I’m sure it was to Reinsdorf. The biggest deal in franchise history?!? Wow. When I read that, just wow. Getting paid more per year than Jose Abreu. But Grandal, the highest paid player in White Sox history says something. It says how damn cheap they’ve been number one. Number two it just shows you how MLB salaries have exploded. Number three, and most importantly for the Sox, is that you have to overpay sometimes to get your guy. Did they really overpay? Maybe not, but this is what it was going to take to get your guy. And for once, the Sox anted up. That should be a very positive sign for all Sox fans.
After missing out on the Harper Machado auction last year, the Sox held on to their perception of being cheap. They were unwillingly to dish out that dough to get their guy. Who knows what was true regarding Machado’s back and forth, or if they were even in the ballpark with Harper, and who really cares if they didn’t want to play for the Sox, but the perception remained; the reality wasn’t that far either. Is that changing with this signing?

The next move, the BIG move, will need to eclipse this one. The next signing should be the highest in franchise history if they go out and get one of the top starting pitchers on the market. This year it’s the Cole and Strasburg sweepstakes. The Sox need to be ALL IN on that one. Adding Grandal is a nice move, no doubt; it’s not enough though. If the Sox believe this is the time to strike, then that’s exactly what they need to do. As crazy ass Hawk would say, don’t stop now boys.
If the Sox were a year away last year, then they should certainly be here this year. Keep waiting for that “2015 Cubs” year for the Sox to come onto the scene. And no, Grandal is not the Lester type signing, if we’re doing comparisons. The Lester type signing would be grabbing a big time starting pitcher. That’s what will push the Sox over the top. That’s what will show me they are serious. Nothing against this signing. Like I said, after further review, it was a very good signing. Filling a big need at one of the most important positions on the field, not only getting a game manager for your pitching staff, but a catcher that contributes in a big way offensively, was a huge score.
I thought their first move would be to bring in another manager; they’re sticking with their guy, which isn’t all that surprising if you think about how Reinsdorf operates. This is not a bad alternative. Yes, the Sox made their splash today. Is it a one time event, or is this only the start of one of the biggest offseasons in Sox history? Burn hot stove, burn…
