Well, it was bound to happen eventually… a win for one of our Chicago teams. The Bulls finally held on to a lead as they beat the Hawks in Atlanta on Wednesday night. Now at 3-6, the Bulls will try for consecutive victories for the first time this season on Saturday night when they host the Rockets.
There was a lot of talk about Boylen’s press conference after the latest blown loss against the Lakers on Tuesday. I was thinking about that… He wanted to get his bench guys good experience. OK, sure, on the surface, as a stand alone comment, that’s a great idea. It would be great to be 9-10 deep. It would be great to run a 2nd unit on the floor and not lose much. I don’t think that’s realistic at this point, nor do I think that’s what the priority should be. The priority should be giving the STARTERS that experience. How much experience do those guys have? At playing winning basketball? Not much. They need all the chances they can get to do that. That’s the only way we’ll know what we need to know about our top guys at this point. Sure, is it nice to see who our go-to bench players will be? Yeah, but not before we establish who our top guys are, and figure out how they handle a close game, how they can close out a game, who is capable of taking their game to the next level. That’s where the focus should be.

That is a useful tool for certain. Phil used to let the Bulls play through a rough patch, and figure it out on the floor. Again, as a stand alone comment, nothing wrong with that. However, when you take into account the current state of the Bulls, it was dumb as hell. These guys are just learning how to win… and aren’t learning that well to be frank. They’ve played well for stretches, well enough to have big leads. They have the talent on paper to make a push for a playoff spot. Yet, on the court, on that final scoreboard, the only places it matters, the Bulls have come up woefully short. So, although they will need to figure it out at some point, I don’t think we’re there yet. Maybe that’s the next stage of development, but we have to crawl before we walk. They need help Jimbo! Call a fricking timeout, circle the wagons, and send them back out there with a plan. Are you able to do that?
I’m not ready to call for Boylen’s head like a lot of folks are (we’ve been calling for a lot of heads lately). Yes, I thought the extension/new contract, whatever you want to call it, was uncalled for, but certainly he deserves at least this year, no? Based on his postgame comments, his timing seems to be off. Figure out who are closers are going to be; help our young guys develop and figure it out. And at all costs, have some fricking urgency around getting victories… NOW! No more BS rebuilding. No more tanking for another 7 pick. The Bulls should be winning… NOW. Do whatever it takes to start building that winning culture. We should be more than ready for that. Go Bulls!
