The Bears are 3-5; the Bulls are 2-5. At 4-6-3, are the Blackhawks our only hope this year?
Sure, 4-6-3 isn’t exactly tearing it up. They did get a win on Sunday night to salvage the weekend… Nice goal to end it… the Toews setup to Kane for the game winner in OT. As Keith skated in to hug both of them, I thought, man how many times have we seen that? The memories those three guys are responsible for over the past decade… and they’re still doing it! I would love to see one more Cup run for these guys.
But it’s the guys that haven’t been a part of the Cup runs that give reason for hope. Let’s start with Kirby Dach, the Hawks number one pick THIS year. Yeah, he’s on the roster… to stay. I haven’t been zoned in yet… haven’t been watching a ton thus far, but from what I’ve seen, there is definite promise there. He’s 19 years old by the way. The Blackhawks just brought up another 19 year old, defenseman Adam Boqvist, who got his first career goal on Sunday night. There’s 21 year old Alex Nylander whose in his 3rd year in the league. There’s 22 year old Dylan Strome in his 3rd year, 24 year old rookie Dominik Kubalik, and oh yeah, 22 year old Alex DeBrincat. All these guys will be major contributors this year. Will it be enough to make a run this year, or is it more like establishing the core of the future, or better yet, both!

The current record doesn’t exactly provide confidence. There have been moments when the Hawks have been terrible, like against Nashville the other day. Did you see the interview with Pekka Rinne after the game? It was embarrassing. It’s nights like those that are as discouraging as watching the Bears or the Bulls. Then there are other nights, other stretches of games, where the Hawks look like they’re close. Listening to our goalie talk about the team gives me some confidence. Biased much? Maybe. But it’s not only his words that are providing confidence…
Robin Lehner, at 28 years old, 7 years younger than current backup goaltender Corey Crawford, has been impressive. Yes, I know Colliton won’t say it, but I will. Lehner needs to be starting more than Crow from here on out. Then, we need to extend Robin, as we watch Corey ride into the sunset. Watching him play is as good as listening to him postgame. The dude is completely chill, dropping knowledge after every game. You have to appreciate his fair assessment of the team’s performance that night. It’s his feeling about the Blackhawks being close to something that intrigues me. It’s his desire to come here and play with this team before the year that is interesting. Does Robin know something we all hope?
Not quite ready to start making my Stanley Cup plans; let’s get to 500 first. Let’s avoid those embarrassing games, the pitiful periods. Let’s build on the good. Let’s watch our young players grow. Let’s follow the leadership of the vets. Let’s put it all together and give us the title hope we need as we enter the long cold winter. Chicago Blackhawks, you are our only hope…
