October 28, 2019: Assigning Blame

We picked up some groceries for the week.  I was feeling better, being with my family, but my wife could still tell.  She asked me if I was going to be like this the rest of the day; like what hun?  It was that obvious.  I was trying to shake it.  I just could not believe what I just witnessed.  I always try to reply to that thread on Twitter, I think it’s Rich Campbell, with the 3 word summary of the game.  My two cents this week was:  losers find ways.

Assigning blame is never fun, but you have to don’t you?  You have to properly assess who did what wrong to get better.  It cracked me up how we started this game.  Nagy came out and ran the I formation, and lo and behold, we got about 8 yards.  That was just for show.  It was like when he lined up with the full backfield in his first game against the Packers last year.  It was like throwing us a bone.  It wasn’t what it should have been, which is a changing of the game strategy.  Something is not working.  The first place you have to look is the coach.  Like I said, honeymoon is over buddy.  Enough of this rah-rah stuff; we need results.  This year has been a train wreck.  It’s like we’re in the toilet, swirling around… the toilet hasn’t been flushed yet, but we’re right there…

Run the ball… and we did.  Hell, we couldn’t have run it less than our franchise low of 7 times from the game before, right?  Montgomery looked good.  Yet, Nagy couldn’t get away from passing the ball.  He made another funny comment, like the idiot one from the week before.  Well, if they know we’re running the ball, it’s a 4 yard loss.  Riddle me this Matt; what if they know we’re passing the ball?  The thing about that I formation is it is a traditional run formation.  It’s not like this 4 wide pistol setup where you motion a RB into the backfield, hand off to him, and then watch 4 guys swarm him.  No, it’s a line it up, and run it down their God damn throats.  Yeah, meatballish maybe?  Here’s the thing.  It’s like a prize fight.  You have to work the body.  You work the body, and it may not look like it’s working, but if you stick with it, over time, it will get the job done.  You soften up the defense.  You set them up for the big run play AND the big pass play.  You keep our defense off the field.  You own the time of possession with a little success.  We did… we were in this game.  Yet, he kept wanting to pass the ball.  It’s like he couldn’t resist.  That pisses me off.  I like the BE YOU motto, but how about DO WHAT IS WORKING motto.  I’m all about Nagy being Nagy, but you have to adapt in this league, or you will not succeed.  This adapting happens every game, every quarter, every drive.  It needs to.  I hate to even mention the Patriots, but case in point.

One other knock against Nagy in this one was the red zone play calling.  Lord knows we spent enough time there in this game, coming away with zippo.  And yes, there is a big chunk of this blame to go to Mitch, but I thought the play calling close to the goal line was shit.  I’m like, don’t you have a GO TO play… a “butter” play, that you go to when you need a TD?  Didn’t see it Matt.  Where is it?  Did you call it and it blew up?  Let’s move on…
