October 27, 2019: Honeymoon is Over

OK, I’ve waited long enough.  Man, sometimes I can barely drag myself to write about this stuff, especially something like what went down on Sunday at Soldier Field.  To make matters worse, I was actually there to see it happen first hand.  Brutal.

Where to begin… let’s start at the end.  Regardless of all the crap that happened prior to the last drive of the game, we had our chance to win it; we had plenty of chances to win this game.  I cannot stress that enough.  There is no way possible we should have ever lost this game; more to come on that.  Like I was saying, forget everything from earlier in the game, and just win.  Get us into field goal position, make the kick, and let’s go home with a W.  I don’t care how ugly it is.  At the end of the day, we needed this win badly.  Mitch made a nice throw on this drive.  We were actually counting the number of nice throws he made all game; I think we ended up with about 6-7.  Then, he made a nice scramble… something that’s been noticeably missing from his game this year… to put us in position to win it.  Then IT happened.

Why in God’s name did we kneel down?  I was fuming.  Line up, run the ball.  Heck, we could have probably got two run plays out of it.  Worried about losing yardage?  Worried about fumbling?  Worried about getting struck by lightning too?  It’s called playing to win the game vs playing not to lose.  Is this what being you is all about Nagy?  Plenty of blame to go around, as usual, but as far as I’m concerned, the honeymoon is over with Nagy.  Like him a lot.  Awesome year last year.  This year?  Not what I expected thus far… very disappointing.

Still, it was a makeable field goal.  And we got Eddy, so we’re good right?  Rewind to the first kick of the day, the one where he channeled his inner Parkey.  As soon as he hit that upright, I told the guys I was sitting with that the last game I was at was the 4 post game for Parkey, and now this???  Maybe I should leave now.  But hey, we won that game last year vs Detroit.  Fast forward to the game winning attempt.  I was sitting in the corner of the end zone where the field goal would be attempted.  I was sitting at an angle, and couldn’t really tell if the ball went in or not.  The indicator to me was seeing a Charger start running on the field… that, and the fact that you could hear a pin drop inside Soldier Field.  Besides a smattering of Charger fans, all you could hear were the Charger players on the field celebrating.  Stunned.

I wanted to punch something.  I was numb.  This one hurt.  I was in a daze walking out of Soldier Field.  I was on my own now, walking towards downtown, picking up the red line at Harrison to head north back home.  I felt in a serious funk; it would take hours to get over this one.  It would take a lot longer to be totally OK.  As my wife and son picked me up halfway home, I had to try to snap out of it.  As I got in the car, my son said “tough loss Dad”…  I told him, you could say that again; the Bears should have just punched me in the nuts, that might have felt better.  Then we headed to Jewel…
