November 25, 2014: Game Over

No, this isn’t about my fantasy football season, although it would be true.  This is about the Game sports talk radio station in Chicago that got cancelled late last week.  They’ll be on the air through the end of the year.  I was pretty bummed when I heard about it.

The station started back in February of this year; I recently found it a few months ago.  Chicago needed another sports talk station; I was excited to finally have one.  Nothing against the Score or ESPN, but there’s enough of us out there to add another one.  This city is sports crazy enough to have a 3rd option.  Why didn’t this work out?  As you could have guessed, I have a few thoughts.

First off, I don’t think they got the word out enough about it.  I really don’t remember ever seeing it advertised.  I just happened to stumble upon it on the FM dial (87.7), which by the way, is awesome.  Having a sports talk station on FM, and not having to worry about it getting cutoff downtown or under bridges was great.  I would have loved to know about this station since its outset.  I wonder how many people didn’t even know this station existed to THIS day…  This was problem number one.

Secondly, they didn’t have a morning sports talk show.  From 6am-9am, I’m going to venture to say, that most people are on their way to work.  During this time frame, WGN chose to have Johnny B on the Game.  I don’t want to hear that crap.  If I did, I’d get satellite and listen to Howard Stern.  I want to hear LOCAL SPORTS TALK.  There was only one option there to begin with, since ESPN chooses to air Mike and MIke during that timeframe.  Who wants to hear those guys go on and on about the national sports scene?  Not I.  Thankfully, I enjoy Mully and Hanley on the Score.  They are my favorite personalities on the Score (love Les too), and I’m able to listen to them.  But… let me tell you, if they moved Kap and Haugh up to that time slot and got the word out, there would be serious competition.  I like Kap and Haugh so much, that I figured out a way to listen to them on my iPhone at work when they come on the air at 9am.  They should have been the morning drive; I would have made the switch.

It’s really all about the on-air personalities when it comes to sports talk radio.  If you can’t stand a guy, you probably won’t listen.  I can’t stand Boers and Bernstein on the drive home, so I don’t listen… most of the time.  Some days I still need my sports fix, so I’ll check to see what they’re talking about.  I was glad to have another option with Harry, Spike and Jarrett.  I’m not the biggest fans of theirs, but they grew on me.  They grew on me enough to listen to them pretty regularly, when I wasn’t blasting my music on the way home in a fit of road rage.  I really can’t get into the guys on ESPN, although again, in a pinch, I’ll flip to them to see what’s going on.  What I don’t want to hear is about the national sports scene… and ESPN is a lot about that, that’s why I don’t tune into them often.  Actually, I don’t even watch ESPN that often believe it or not.  I’m locked on Comcast Sports Net for my local fix, and then I go to the NFL, MLB, NHL, and NBA networks if I want to see a national flavor for our teams’ performance.  ESPN is after that…

I want to hear Chicago sports talk.  I want to hear people talk who live and breathe this stuff like me.  I want to hear people who are from this town and have went through all the ups and downs over the years like me.  These are the people I want to hear from… people that I can relate to; people that the die-hard fans of Chicago can relate to.  This is why I share my opinions about Chicago sports daily.  This is why I want to follow my pipe dream of doing this for a living one day.  It’s because it’s AUTHENTIC 100% guaranteed.  There is no faking the funk.  People can tell the difference.

I wish the Game were sticking around.  I think they’ll keep Kap and Haugh on Comcast, but I need my options on the radio too.  I mean, it was only given 9 months to work???  That seems like an unfair shake.  This WOULD catch on; I know it would.  If WGN is giving up, somebody else should step in and run with this idea.  There is plenty of room for another sports talk station in Chicago, and with the personalities of Kap and Haugh leading the way, this station WOULD have worked… and still could.

That’s my 2 cents as usual.  I actually sent the producer of the Game multiple emails about this website and my desire to blog for the Game… no response.  I also asked him why wasn’t there sports on between 6am-9am…  I guess my shot to work for the Game now is done, but there will be another.  There will be another that sticks, and will be heard throughout Chicago for years to come.  I’ll be part of that somehow, some way…  Until then, here’s my daily blurb for the day…  Talk tomorrow.

Your right, I never heard of the station. Bad marketing job. To many talk shows out there talking about the same stuff anyway, usually the OBVIOUS. PLUS, people are suppose to be WORKING at WORK when most of theses shows are on, not listening to distracting talk radio all day. Then when you go outside, 40% of the people are walking around with headphones on. WTF! They wonder how they got hit by a car or somebody walked into them and are offended by it. The best is when they say they didn’t hear you.

Personally, I prefer the national sports information shows. Mike & Mike good enough for me during the AM in car to the train. I get the general scope of what’s going on in sports, what already happened, and whats coming up. The best games and players usually have nothing to do with Chicago. The Bears sports talk is so over done on the radio all winter its annoying, and lets beat the DRose horse to death a little more while were at it.
I got apps that update me on everything about my favorite teams, at my convenience.

Just watch and enjoy the games.

    My lunch is over.
