I’ve been dabbling in the Bulls preseason. I actually sat and watched some of the Bulls Pelicans game the other night. Man, I like that Zion Williamson. I know there’s a lot of hype around him, but he looks the part. Part of the Jordan brand coming out of rival Duke, he knows his history too; realizing he was playing in the house Jordan built…which served as our home court for half of our titles. I respect that. He also knows who the GOAT is, so I can like him. He will definitely be in the superstar conversation from this year going forward.
But what about the Bulls? Who is in that conversation? The last superstar we had was Jimmy Butler; some may disagree. Now, seeing him turn into the diva that believes his own hype, it’s easy to say that the trade that sent him away was a good one. Truth is though, we haven’t had a player of his caliber since; that’s facts.

I like it. I’d like to see Zach take the next step, and be that guy for us; I’d love to include him in the superstar conversation. But the reason he’s not in that discussion today is not because he played on a bad team; he’s just not there…yet. Yeah, I’ll throw that ‘yet’ in there. Do I believe it will happen? I’m not sold. He’s a great player, but not a superstar. At times, he can seemingly take his man to the hole at will. Other times, he’s busy taking the most difficult shots in the league; he’s not that bad at them either. Yet, when the game is on the line, he seems to like taking that ridiculously tough shot vs taking it to the rim. I’d like to see that change. His defense? Well, he can certainly improve in that area. What about making his teammates better? Is that even a superstar quality nowadays?
He’s just one piece of the puzzle this year for our Bulls. Lauri Markkanen may have something to say about that superstar conversation before it’s all said and done too. Again, great player, but superstar? Definitely not yet. Regardless of where they sit in the superstar ranks across the league, these two guys are our superstars heading into this year. And this is why the Bulls will be fighting to make the playoffs vs. fighting for that 7th championship. Until these two can be those guys legitimately, or we add someone who is, not much will change unfortunately. Boylen or not, it’s a player’s league. Ready to see our guys take a step. Go Bulls!
