October 8, 2019: Getting Better

posted in: Bulls | 0

The one thing I told my team before the first game of the season, the most important thing, is that, like the Beatles, we’re getting better all the time. We took our first step forward in our second game of the year. I think I already mentioned this, but we still did lose. An 8-6 loss is a whole lot better than a 22-0 loss. There were positive signs.

My son scored our first bucket of the season; I was hyped up. Although after that first bucket, he seemed to take his foot off the pedal. I still told him after the game that I was proud of him; that is the truth. But if he played in the game like he did in practice, watch out. I know he’s only 7, playing in a heavy 9 year old league, but he can play. I explained it to him like this after the second game. If he played a 0 in the first game, then he played like a 50 in the second game; he still has ways to go. We’ll get there.

The best player on our team scored the other 4 points. I told him before the game he’d be getting his first bucket in this one. He did, and added another. He’s good, but it’s hard to do well when you’re getting triple teamed every time up. We’ll definitely need others to step up.

We blew the lead late due to the full court press that is allowed in the final 2 minutes of the game. After they tied it, I’ll admit, I was kind of shell shocked. We did call a timeout, I did talk to the team, but I wasn’t all there. My late game coaching let us down; I need to get better too. Can’t wait for our next practice.

This loss hurt. It was one of those games where I’m not so sure we were the better team, but we were about to steal one. Knowing victories may be few and far between, I really wanted his one. After going 0-11 in baseball, I was ready to get our first win in months. My son wasn’t too down about it; neither was the rest of the team. I was happy about that, so I couldn’t show that I was pissed. The bigger picture was that what I had told them, came true, immediately, in the next game. We got better. That’s what counts. The wins will come…hopefully. Until then, keep grinding. Go Bulls!
