It’s just a little bit harder to get going on a Monday after a Bears loss, especially one like this… one that got away. When a game we should have won ends up in the loss column, it hurts. It hurts more in the NFL than any other sport because there are only 16 opportunities to get wins. Each and every week is critical, that’s why the whiplash reaction to wins and losses on a weekly basis across the league. Last week the Bears were Super Bowl contenders with their historically great defense; this week the Bears are in trouble, looking for answers to multiple questions. It’s funny like that, but we should be used to this. Don’t get too high, don’t get too low, and hope it all turns out OK in the long run. Easier said than done.
I honestly feel like we underestimated our opponent in this one. We’re just going to fly into another country, treat it like a short vacation, and step onto the field and take our pre-qualified W. It doesn’t work that way. It felt a bit like Week 1… the Bears believing all the hype about themselves, and not coming out and getting the job done. After that loss, it was back to the grind, grabbing 3 straight wins. Walking into our last game against the Raiders before the bye, I’m sure we were feeling ourselves a bit. BAM! This is what happens. Do we need these reality checks from time to time?
Of course you can’t win every game… unless you’re those bastards from 1972 in Miami. It’s not about that. We will lose a game again. It’s about getting your mind right. It’s about bringing your A game each and every time you step on the field. If you bring it, and get beat, then so be it. If you don’t, and get beat, then regret sets it. I’m not the coach, and I’m not in that locker room, but it certainly didn’t look like we were zoned in that first half on Sunday. Yes, we did have our backup QB starting, and this time, our opponent had a week to plan for him. Yes, we did lose Hicks early in this one, but we played all of last week without him… and without Roquan. Yes, the whole arriving in London later in the week theory; I’m buying it. But all this stuff is just a bunch of excuses. There are no excuses for a team that has Super Bowl aspirations.

I don’t have to remind you, and I’m sure I don’t have to remind the players or coaches. Don’t we feel the same way about that playoff exit last year? Regret? Sure do, and we blame Parkey… rightfully so. Yet, we did have a chance to stop the Eagles on 4th & goal, and didn’t…. just like all we had to do yesterday was prevent Oakland from going 90+ yards to win. Yes, Mitch finished strong in that playoff game, but what about the first half? Sound familiar? What is the problem here? Are we holding our Bears to unachievable expectations?
This Bears team is a legitimate Super Bowl contender; I don’t care what anybody says after this ugly loss. That fact does not change week to week. But you know what does? The standings… and we lost ground across the board. I don’t want a season like the Cubs, with too many losses like this to count; a season full of regret. I want the Bears to play like we know they can. Are they who we thought they were? Bear Down!
