Did I tell you we started our basketball season? Did I tell you how we did? I guess I should. It was a blowout. We got smoked. 22-0! Yeah, it was that bad. Only one way to go from here…
It was the first game of the season in our league. I figured it’d be a tough game, but I didn’t realize that it would be a train wreck. Good thing is, I prepped the kids for anything in my pre game chat. I asked them how many games we had this season? The answer is 10. I told them that every team makes the playoffs. I told them the most important thing to keep in mind is that we’re going to get better every week. I told them to go out there and have fun, and try their best. Then we promptly got wiped out.
Regardless of what I told them before the game, there were some pretty disappointed faces after the game. To not score one bucket. To have about 20 turnovers. To have the opposing team miss more shots than we took in total. They were frustrated during the game. It reminded me of when we’d play across the street from this factory. The lunch bell would ring, and a bunch of them would come and play ball. The court was filled. It was like 8 on 8. It was an absolute hack fest. We didn’t get hacked so much, and we certainly threw the ball away our fair share of times, but there was a certain level of aggressiveness that they had, and we didn’t. I did absolutely nothing in the way of in-game coaching; zero adjustments made. I guess I looked just like most of my kids: a deer in headlights. We’d get better.

I couldn’t wait for practice this Wednesday. As we gathered, and I pulled the team together, it was funny how each of them remembered the final score; it definitely stung. First thing I told them, was that just because we didn’t score any points, didn’t mean we didn’t do anything. I had kept stats in each category. I went around kid by kid and told them what they did. 2 rebounds, 2 steals, 8 rebounds, 3 steals, 1 block, etc. Each one of them did something. Next it was how to bring the ball up. We can’t make any baskets if the ball is getting taken from us 30 feet from the rim. We spread everybody out. We practiced passing, dribbling. Next was defense. I was going to show them how to play zone, but decided good old fashioned man to man was the way to go. Everybody cover your man. Finally, we played some knockout; I think I know how to play it now. It was a little fun to end the practice.
I think we’re ready…to score at least a couple baskets. I’m not guaranteeing a win by any means, but I am guaranteeing we take a step forward. We have 9 more “practice games” to go. Let’s get better Baby Bulls!
