September 14, 2019: The Draft

No, not a real pro sports draft, or one of my fantasy leagues’ draft.  Today was the draft for my son’s 7-9 year old basketball team.  What would transpire on this day will play a major role into how this season will go.

Of course, I’m a bit worried.  Coming off a winless baseball season, here we are, back in the “jump” year… my 7 year old son playing in a 7-9 year old league.  My first year in this age bracket as coach.  Definitely want to get some wins.  How will we do it?

We had practice earlier this week, where I got to see all the kids in the league.  There’s some big kids; some kids that have skill.  Whole ‘nother world from that 4-6 year old league with the rims lowered to 8 feet.  No, we would play on regulation height this year.  I asked about dribbling, travelling, etc; they said they’re pretty lax with it, but that they customize it per player, expecting the older kids to follow the rules to a tee, and giving the younger kids a little slack.  Although come playoff time, rules are stricter; can’t wait to see this play out.  I remembered the names of a few kids, which came in pretty handy during the draft.

Most important thing I had to find out was what team name was available.  We were not the Bulls the last 2 years, because that was already taken.  However, the Bulls WERE available in this age bracket.  I jumped on that.  I can wear my Bulls gear freely as coach all year long.  Now that we have the team name locked in, we might as well plan to be here for the next 3 years… haha.  Now that we got that out of the way, how will the teams be structured?  How many players do each of us get up front?  It’s kind of a moving target.  Of course my son and his buddy whose dad is the assistant coach will be on the team, plus one other kid we played with before.  Only problem is they are all 7 year olds.  Thankfully, the guy at the park evened it out a bit, pre-assigning a few older kids to our team.  That’s smart.  I’m not looking for a stacked team, just a way in which all the teams in the league are relatively even.  Not easy though, I know.

Then came our first pick.  I remembered one kid’s name in particular; he was NOT there on draft day.  I didn’t say anything until it was our turn to select a player.  I asked if we could select a kid that was NOT there.  They said yes.  I looked on the roster, and found him.  I asked if he was available.  They said yes.  I said I want him.  Ringer time baby!!!  Well, I hope it’s him…  maybe there were multiple kids with the same name… this could blow up in my face!  Nah, pretty sure… and with the other kids that were assigned to our team before the draft, I feel like we have a pretty good mix.  Maybe we’ll actually win some games this year…

Now it’s time for me to do a little research on basketball drills we could run at practice.  I definitely want to be on top of my game, trying to help the kids get better in the limited practice time we’ll have.  Waiting for the schedule to be released; ready to start another season with my boy.  Let’s go Baby Bulls!
