September 8, 2019: Cliff Walking

Whew… trying to remember an uglier run of Chicago sporting events in recent history.  As the weekend comes to an end, I don’t know about you, but I’m definitely licking my wounds.

It all started with the Bears loss.  I talked about it a bit already; don’t really feel the need to talk too much more about it, at least the game itself.  Chalk it up, move on.  I know it’s difficult to do that especially in the week to week world of the NFL, and especially if you are heavily invested into this fan thing, but I’m going to do it.  Like I said, if I thought THAT was the Bears team that we will be watching all year long, I would be depressed right about now; it’s not though.  In this case, for this particular game, I am convinced that these Bears are NOT who we thought they were… and that they will be who we thought they were from here on out; you follow?

Now the Cubs… that’s a different story.  Obviously have felt all year through the ups and the downs that the division will be ours when it’s all said and done; I thought that up until this Brewers series.  Now that we’ve dropped 3 out of 4 to Milwaukee, and St. Louis keeps winning, for the first time all year, I feel like that’s slipping away…. 4.5 games away to be exact.  With 7 games to go against the Red-Turds, I’m not giving up completely, but I’m starting to feel like the Wild Card is our best bet at this point.  Furthermore, in looking at the current NL Wild Card standings after this weekend’s games, I’m nervous about that as well.  Could the Cubs be completely shut out from the 2019 postseason?  That’s a scary thought that gets scarier by the day.  Ugh!

Finding out Baez is probably done for the year didn’t help all of this.  Sure, he hasn’t been MVP Javy from 2018, but he’s been good… really good.  Losing him sucks.  And oh yeah, our closer that we brought in to work miracles out of the bullpen is on the DL again.  Sure could have used him on Saturday night in Milwaukee.  No Morrow all year, and limited Kimbrel, pretty much means for most of the year the Cubs have gone without a true closer.  Has any team in recent history won without one of those?  It’s piece mail time from here on out with a bullpen that has been very streaky.

So yeah, I’m cliff walking right about now.  I’m not going to jump, at least not due to the Bears… but the baby Bears, or Cubs as we know them by, are pushing me closer to the edge.  Certainly looking forward to West Coast baseball coming up in San Diego, but they better play well… they need to play well… if not for the single most important reason of making me stay up past my bedtime to watch them.  I’d hate to be tired all week AND have the Cubs lose; I could certainly deal with that if they win.  Homestretch time; let’s go.  Go Cubs!
