The Cubs followed up their first road win of the week with another, and got a road series win; yeah!!! I couldn’t believe when I looked it up; the Cubs only won 5 road series all year??? How is this team still tied for first place? Well, their home record is just a bit better.
But yeah, 3 of these road series wins started in April. A sweep in Miami, a series win over Arizona, and a two game sweep of Seattle that ended on May 1st. A series win in Washington on May 19th was it… until now. Wild stuff man. I had to double and triple check it… it’s accurate… and still mind boggling.
I had a feeling that the Cubs would pull this last game out, and no, not because it’s the Pirates. The fact that they got to hang out and act like Little Leaguers for the day, had to be like Chicken Soup for these guys’ baseball souls. Forgetting about all the drama… Joe’s managerial future… the underperforming offense… the handful of horrific starts… the most blown saves in the majors in the 2nd half… the painful walk off losses… the squeezing of those bat handles… the hearing and reading about all the Cubs fans going wacko over this team’s Jekyll and Hyde nature… the window that was wide open for this team now looking less and less open… the future of the roster in question… anything else? Just pile it on when you’re going bad. But today, forget about all that. Remember why you originally played the game; it was for the love… it was because it was fun… you loved it, you had fun at it, and you were really good at it. You turned this game into a career that supports your families very well. And yes, even though it is your job, if you keep it all in perspective, it can still be fun… you can still love it… you can still be good at it…. and you can win, win, win!!! That’s all we want to do is win win win no matter what… haha.

Well, at this level it is. The pressure to win is paramount, especially in a city like ours, with a team like the Cubs. Especially with a team that ended the drought, and still has a ton of talent, and still should be winning more titles. The expectations are like nothing we’ve ever experienced. With social media, there’s so much out there all the time about your team… so much negative that you have to just brush off. Between the internet, the sports shows, the radio programs… the spotlight shines bright on these young Cubbies. It’s nice to try to forget about that for a day… and I knew, that if they could do that, when they would do that, today, with all the little leaguers, they would play their best. Now how to bottle that up…
Maybe this little road series win, this final game in front of 100s of little leaguers can help get us going. Yes, it will help to get back home, but maybe that frame of mind that we found for one night in Pennsylvania, maybe that can carry over. Things seemed to get a bit too real in Houston earlier this year when Almora lined one into the stands and hit a little girl in the head; I’m still not sure he’s completely over it. And by the way, I’m OK with him going down to the minors… Schwarby did it, Happ, Russell… it’s not fun, but it’s OK. We’ll see him soon. But yeah, I can see that staying on your mind, especially if you’re a person who gives a crap about things bigger than baseball. That smack of reality on top of the grind, the spotlight, the expectations, the lame duck manager, potentially roster overhaul without another World Series victory, the pressure… Yeah, they got to man up, no doubt, or maybe they have to channel their inner kid. I’m sure it’s a balance, it always is. But keep it light boys… have fun… play for the love of the game… and you will play your best. We’re good enough to get this thing done. Find your happy place, and fly some damn Ws. Go Cubs!
