August 15, 2019: Nightmare in Philadelphia

posted in: Cubs | 0

Man am I glad we didn’t make that road trip to Philadelphia…  if the first 2 games weren’t bad enough, a walkoff Bryce Harper grand slam which capped off a 5 run comeback and a Phillies sweep?!?!  Talk about a nightmare in Philadelphia.

Deep breath……  IN…. OUT…. IN…. OUT…  OK, feel better?  The good news is our stop in Philly is over; the bad news is we will still be in the state of Pennsylvania throughout the weekend.  Surely we will finally get a road series win in Pittsburgh… right?  The 6-4 record I wanted on the road trip is out; we can still get to 5-5 with a sweep of the Pirates… I’ll just settle for a road series win at this point.  Take our lumps, and get back to Wrigley, where the Cubs are a completely different team.

What if the Cubs never won another game on the road this regular season, and what if they never lost another game at home this year?  That would equal 21-20 from here on out, which would put us at 85-77.  Is that enough to get in the playoffs?  Surely we’ll win another game on the road, and surely we’ll lose one at home… but what do the Cubs have to do in this last 25% of the season to win the division and get into the postseason?  How about 26-15?  That gets us to 90 wins… that’s got to be enough.

A look at the standings still shows the Cubs tied for first place in the middle of August; that’s the good news.  The not so good news feels like we keep finding ways to lose games.  The offense not scoring enough.  The starting pitching having an “off” day.  The bullpen blowing a game.  That pretty much sums up these last 3 games in Philly… we could get deeper of course, but to sum it up… high level…  remember how we felt at the beginning of the season… after the 7th game when we started the season 1-6.  Does it feel better or worse right about now?

I’m putting the blinders on.  I’m not caring right now.  There is one thing to do, and that’s make the playoffs… preferably win the division.  I’m not going to dwell on HOW we lost these games, because that would be super painful.  Just like all our wins count the same in the standings, so do our losses.  And I’m going to ignore the probability that these tough losses are taking a toll on this ball club, because regardless of it all, we still hold our destiny in our hands.  We haven’t dug ourselves a hole.  We’re not chasing a bunch of games with the schedule dwindling.  We’re not there… yet.  No, we’re tied for first place.  Through it all… all the pain that we have felt this season topped by a walk off grand slam that hasn’t landed yet… we’re still here.  OK?

Back to the diamond on Friday night in Pittsburgh… looking for a complete game in every aspect.  That what it takes to win consistently… and on the road.  We can’t drop pop ups.  We can’t forget how to hit.  We can’t throw BP in the first couple innings.  We can’t give away 5 run leads.  Come on… focus boys.  All my gut feelings are telling me bad things, but I’m not listening.  I’m looking at the facts, the standings, the schedule… and I can see, that we can still do this.  It is in our hands.  How about a road win or 2 or 3 this weekend?  Go Cubs!
