Who gets it? I talked about the lack of leaders in Chicago sports earlier this week. Jonathan Toews seems like the only guy who really gets it. Well, there are some more people who get it… and then there’s those who DON’T get it. As we look around today’s teams, let’s figure out who is who.
Joakim Noah was in the news this week. His passionate defense of DRose after Thursday’s big win in Toronto, which was the location of Rose’s latest injury, shows that he gets it. He stood by his guy, the Bulls best player, in his time of need. With Rose being torn down due to his latest bad choice of words, Jo stood tall. Leave him alone basically. Let the guy be. I agree. Although I don’t like what DRose said, and to me it shows a little bit of him NOT getting it, I don’t hate him for it. Here’s a rookie of the year, ex-MVP, coming off 2 big injuries which caused him to spend years on the bench. Then, he starts off this year with a few minor injuries… you think we as fans are frustrated??? Try walking in DRose’s shoes. Yeah, yeah, I know… pay me $19 million a year to sit on the bench. But you got to know this stuff is killing him. All signs point to him as a competitor, with his hard work on and off the court. He wants to win. He wants to deliver for his hometown fans. Sitting on the bench, going through injury after injury, has to be rough. I like the fact that Noah came to his defense.
Noah gets it. HE is the leader of the Bulls. He understands what it takes, both on and off the court. His passion is obvious. He wears his emotions on his sleeve, which sometimes gets him in trouble, but also makes us love him even more. The statement that he plays for the fans in the 300 level… that’s getting it. That’s realizing that most fans can’t afford to sit close to the action, and most fans can’t even afford to get IN the stadium. He plays for the every day man that fills Chicago. This is another example of how he gets it. These are all the reasons we love him.
Checking some Bears news this week, we see an example of someone who doesn’t get it. Brandon Marshall challenging somebody to a fight over Twitter? This guy doesn’t get it. You’re in the middle of a horrible stretch of games in one of the biggest disappointments of a season that I can remember. Where is his focus? Is this a guy really trying to get better? Is this a guy who wants to help dig us out of this hole… try to salvage something positive out of this season? No. He’s out there grabbing the wrong kind of attention… again. He continues to film his weekly show in New York; something that was OK when the season started, but looks really bad now, when a top 5 projected offense looks like a high school team. He is a important cog in the offense, yet is getting attention for all the wrong things. It’s times like this when you need to get back to the basics. It’s time to put everything else to the side, and FOCUS on the little things; focus on the fundamentals. Take away the distractions and simplify the game; that’s how you get back on track. BMarsh doesn’t get it.

What about our baseball teams? How about that new manager the Cubs hired? He’s talking about the cathedral that is Wrigley Field. He’s talking about playoffs. He’s talking about World Series. He’s talking about buying everybody a beer and a shot. Does this guy get it? It’s a hell of a first impression. The Sox just said goodbye to somebody who got it: Paul Konerko. Here was a guy who went out there everyday and did his job. He didn’t look like a baseball player. He looked like somebody you may run into at your corner bar. Yet, he went out there every day, and performed at a high level, not only during the season, but in the clutch, when it really counts. He got it. Who will be the next to step up on the South Side and get it? Abreu and Sale stand up
It’s not that hard guys. We love guys who play hard. We love guys who realize how lucky they are to be playing a game for a living. We love guys who understand how important sports is to a lot of us out there. We love guys who understand us. We want you to be 110% dedicated to the game, and 110% dedicated to winning. We want to cheer you on… we want to put you on a pedestal. We want to be rewarded for OUR dedication.
Many have came, and many have understood this… many more never got it. This should be something that is discussed in length with players before they come here, that way, there’s no surprises. That way, you’ll understand what it takes to play in this city. Too many players DON’T get this, and those that do get it, are our heroes. These are the guys who will be remembered forever. You may be a superstar or a role player, but if you get it, if you get it AND win big, you will never be forgotten. If you don’t get it, you will never make it here. Do you get it?

“Yeah, yeah, I know… pay me $19 million a year to sit on the bench. But you got to know this stuff is killing him.”
What are you talking about–killing him?? He is worried about whether he will have to limp to his son’s graduation in 16 years–NOTHING is killing him. Yes, it is a “figure of speech”, but no offense, that is absolutely the worst metaphor you could use about DRose’s attitutude.
JEFFK
Just because he said that stupid comment, you don’t think it’s killing him to be sitting there and not playing? Yeah, Rose seems like an arrogant jerk who is only worried about money and doesn’t care about his team or winning… one comment does not make me think that.

Sorry, that should have been “attitude”.

“Yeah, yeah, I know… pay me $19 million a year to sit on the bench. But you got to know this stuff is killing him.” And no, I don’t believe that it was or is killing him. I believe he said that last year without saying a word. How many road and/or home games did he ‘choose’ not to be there with the team, ‘his team’, to be on the bench and cheer them on with a little moral support?? I think that spoke volumes without saying a word! And as for ‘walking in his shoes’, I’d probably at least tie them up. If you saw the injury play from earlier in the week, you should have noticed that as he planted his left foot, his shoe came partially off of his foot. If he had laced the hi-tops up properly and tightly, he would probably not have been injured. What’s the point of wearing hi-tops if you don’t lae them fully to take advantage of the extra support they provide? And as for the comment, you’re right, he just doesn’t get it!
