July 27, 2019: We Will Meet Again

The result of our first round playoff game was not a surprise.  We lost; that’s 0-10 on the season.  The score this time around was 14-0; I was a bit disappointed that we couldn’t get a run.  Although I was very happy with our defense, which kept the game this “close”.  Overall though, I was a bit pissed off…

Normally, I don’t get like that, especially this year.  Knowing how this season was most likely going to go, I couldn’t get too upset about the end result.  I wanted each kid to get better at baseball as the year went on, and they have.  Yes, the results don’t show it, but… this team in particular is head and shoulders better than any other team in the league; we’ve been over that.  The fact that we had to play them 3 straight games is unfortunate for us.  Still, I don’t think the kids’ spirits are broken.  Again, we’ll have one more chance for a victory this year in the 3rd place game next Saturday.

It didn’t take long to get pissed off in this game.  It was our first batter.  The count went to 3-2; she fouled a ball off.  After she fouled another one off, she was called out.  It was one of the rules (I guess) that we didn’t run into all season.  During coach pitch, if the count goes full, and the batter fouls a pitch off, they only get one more swing… regardless of the result.  So my girl gets called out for a foul ball…???  I had to explain that to her, and some of the parents.  It’s a stupid rule, plain and simple.  Definitely one which I will vote to change next year.  Then came a play in the bottom of the inning, where there was a play at 2nd base.  We were on defense.  As the kid ran to 2nd base, our 2nd baseman was “in the baseline” right next to the bag, which made it a bit difficult to get to the bag.  Now, if this was the major leagues, for sure interference.  But our league???  Anyways, he was called safe, which I questioned, but the other coach was yelling for interference.  Really?  I mean, you guys are going to pound us, AND you want to call ticky tack bullshit?  I didn’t call “out of the baseline” a couple games ago when your kid ran in a circle to avoid a tag; that would have been petty on my part.  But you want to be petty?  And you’re that much better than everybody too?  Just play ball.

That one got my competitive juices flowing a bit; I had our kid throw at their kid the next time up.  Just kidding.  I did feel a flicker of anger though…  I’m going to file that away, because I do know one thing; we will meet again.

It won’t be this year.  There is a very good chance we finish the season without a win, while this team finishes undefeated, but that’s OK.  There will be next year, and we will be better, and your team will not have all of the same good players, then we’ll see…  OK, but back to our final game of the season.  Time for one more practice before we go for win #1.  Go A’s!
