July 25, 2019: Winless Ending

posted in: Cubs | 0

Thursday night brought the end of our regular season.  It was prolonged a week due to the rain and extreme heat the week before.  We would face the undefeated, 1st place team again.  It was yet another loss; 14-2 was the damage in this one.  We finished the season 0-9… but all teams do make the playoffs.

I knew it was going to be a rough year; I was hoping that we would grab one W at least…  Hey, we could make that happen in the playoffs.  Yes, we will face the best team again in the first round, but the next week will be against one of the other beatable teams in the 3rd place game.  Hope is still alive.  Hope is alive and well.  Our team has gotten better; I’m assuming all teams have by playing a whole year of baseball, but we started at the very bottom.  Every single kid has gotten better, and more importantly, I don’t think any of them were discouraged from playing baseball ever again by not winning a game the entire season.  There were a lot of great moments; we had a lot of fun.  And yes, we learned a lot of baseball.

The biggest challenge was keeping my son encouraged.  He understands winning and losing… OK, most kids probably do, but that is really important to him.  Every game a team scores multiple runs against us in an inning, he asks me from the field, “what’s the score?”  He wants to win; definitely not a bad thing… but rough year for those goals.  More importantly, was getting better, and still wanting to play every week.  We succeeded in both of those areas.  It was all about paying our dues this year… learning lessons… taking one on the chin, and keeping it moving.  Every team, every kid has been there; having to endure a tough year in the standings.  What will become of this going forward?  You know I’ll keep you posted.

This game had its moments too.  My son almost caught a fly ball, which would have been the first one we caught all year; it was in and out of his glove.  By the look on his face, he knows he should have had it.  One of our girls kept her hot hitting alive; hits in 8 of her last 9 ABs… I’d have to double check that.  The final kid who wanted to pitch this year got his chance.  I asked the team who wanted to pitch, and made sure each of them got a chance.  Just that opportunity on the mound… pitching in a real live game for the first time… that’s an experience.  Some kids will take to it, some kids will not, but the fact that you want to get out there and have the ball in your hand for every pitch, shows something.  That’s brave; I give it to these kids for trying… I think it’s important to let them try.  Thankfully, my son did get a hit in his 2nd AB, and scored our first run after the next batter drove him in.  He had a smile from ear to ear after stepping on home plate.

Saturday will be our playoff game; could you imagine if we pulled that out?  Haha…not likely, although I do think we will have a good chance in the final game.  More to come… much more.  Go A’s!
