July 23, 2019: Bad Timing

I had a bad feeling about this series. Yeah, I know the Cubs were coming off a 7-2 homestand to start the 2nd half of the season. That felt good, for sure. But we should have known that was coming, right? Look at the Cubs home record; it’s the 3rd best in the majors. Doing well at Wrigley is to be expected. It’s no guarantee, and it still feels good, but that’s what we expect from our Cubs… at least if they’re going to win the division like we believe. What is unexpected has been the Cubs road record. That would be tested as we headed to the West Coast… problem is, it couldn’t have been worse timing.

We thought we were hot… heading into this series against the Cubs, the Giants were 15-3 in their past 18 games; they are the hottest team in the majors. And then Monday night happens… we had the lead the whole game, added insurance runs, and still gave it up in the 8th for a series opening loss. OK, we can still win the series. Well, after Tuesday night, that is impossible.

It was another great game between two potential playoff teams in what could turn out to be a very important series. Do you remember the Cubs Giants series in 2015 at Wrigley? That sweep of the defending champions propelled the Cubs to the playoffs after an awesome 2nd half of the season; we’ve gotten really used to that with Maddon’s Cubs. It’s the 2nd half of the season now… come on guys. But back to this series, for the Giants, in Bochy’s last year, they are now 17-3 in their past 20 games. They have championship pedigree; they have great experienced veteran players. Could they be making one last run for their skipper who already is in the elite club with 3 World Series champions? Could you imagine them making the playoffs, winning the wild card game, and matching up against their rival Dodgers in the NLDS? That would be quite a story. Hopefully the Cubs will be waiting for the winner of that series.

I didn’t make it all the way through the game; I think I faded during the 12th inning… thankfully I didn’t get to see the bad ending to this great game. The Cubs battled back, like the good team they are, yet, they couldn’t finish the job. It was kind of like Game 3 of the NLDS back in 2016 in San Francisco; was hoping more for a Game 4 type ending. Playing in San Fran brings back good memories, then I see the 20 year celebration of 1989 signs behind home plate; yeah, that’s not so good. Losing these first two games…not so good either.

But like in all these cases, I check the standings. Although I really want to put some distance between us and everybody else, we are still in first place. At the end of the day, that’s all that matters. I just don’t want it to come down to one game; we see how that turned out last year. Time to salvage one game of the series; go Cubs!
