July 22, 2019: Seven, Ugh, Nine

posted in: Cubs | 0

You know, it pisses me off even more when the Cubs blow a West Coast game… Staying up past my bed time to watch the Cubbies bring a W home only to see them blow it. It was a rough start to the road trip.

Listening to the broadcast, we heard the Cardinals hitting a grand slam in the top of the 10th in Pittsburgh to take the lead; that game is over. Then the Pirates made a come back, and were within 1 run, with 2 guys on nobody out; yes! Cards held on; damn. Then we saw the Reds up; yes. Next was another grand slam, this time for the Brewers who took the lead; damn. But, the Reds came back, and won the game; yes! Drama, drama, drama. That brings us back to our Cubs. Up all game long… adding an insurance run courtesy of Bryzzo in the top of the 8th to go up 2 runs, only to see Strop up 3 in the bottom of the 8th. We made a little noise in the 9th, but took the tough L; ouch.

Speaking of players I have been all over about… Pedro was never in my circle of trust. As he got hurt, and fell out of Joe’s circle of trust in the 2016 playoffs, I was in agreement. Then, as the years went on, looking at his numbers, seeing that he is one of the best Cubs relievers of all time, I began to trust Pedro. Why do I doubt this guy? I don’t have a problem with how he wears his hat either. Still, what reason do I have not to like this guy coming out of the pen; the second piece of one of the best trades in Cubs history. OK, I’m riding with Pedro. However, lately, Strop is really F’ing up.

With the addition of Kimbrel, the Cubs were supposed to have seven, eight, nine locked down with Cishek, Strop, and Kimbrel. It’s been more like seven, ugh, nine. His ERA is in the 5 neighborhood. I don’t care about all these other stats, an ERA near 5 is NOT good. The Padres game… shaky as hell, but we held on; same with the Pirates game earlier this month. We weren’t so lucky tonight vs the Giants.

The Cubs who started the 2nd half with a 7-2 homestand appeared to be settling in for the home stretch; yes, I know, one game does not change that. But with Strop, it’s been more than just one bad outing. How long does Joe stick with him in the 8th? At least until Morrow comes back… IF Morrow comes back. Supposedly, he’s getting closer… finally. But how much can we really trust him right away? We’re in the heat of a pennant race… each game counts they tell us… Joe’s job is on the line… You want to throw Morrow into the fire? Hey, we did that with Carl on Sunday; how’d that turn out? Yes, he’s in Iowa right now.

Certainly Strop is in no jeopardy there… not yet. But maybe it’s time for a phantom injury so he can get his shit together. What should have been 3 and 3.5 over the Cards and Brewers is now 2 and 2.5. Yes, it’s only a game… yes, it’s 1 game!!! That’s important enough, right? How many of these were there in the first half that we wish we had back? It’s crunch time now… we can’t have these types of losses. Yet, in 162 we will have these gut shots. Still doesn’t make it feel any better.

The road woes continue in a horrible way. Only thing we can do is regroup and get them Tuesday night. We can still win the series. Ready to put this loss in the rearview ASAP. Go Cubs!
