It’s been a little more than 2 weeks since the end of the World Series this year, but baseball is alive and well, especially in our city.

My son and I head to Lincoln Park Zoo every Saturday morning.  On our way, besides naming popular landmarks on our trip down Fullerton such as a couple car washes, Dunkin Donuts, Popeye’s, and DePaul, we listen to baseball on the radio.  Every Saturday morning Bruce Levine hosts a baseball show on the Score from 8-10am.  I love it.

It’s especially great this year, with all the change on the horizon for both sides of town, and the renewed hope of a World Series title that awaits every spring.  This spring, that dream may actually be more than the annual pipe dream.

The majority of that hope lies with the Cubs, although as I previously mentioned, I believe you can hold that same hope for the White Sox, and many of the other teams in the Majors.  Although the fact that there is no salary cap gives some teams unfair advantages, the addition of the wild card allows more teams to get a shot at winning it all.  Yes, the same teams seem to be there year in year out, but there are also new teams sprinkled in every year, and sometimes, that new wild card entry makes a magical run.  The KC Royals couldn’t complete that run, but it was fun to watch.  It’s fun to watch a team that hasn’t won in a while make a run at the World Series title.

This is of course the lifelong story for Cubs fans; that chasing after something we’ve never experienced.  The lifelong Sox fans got their dreams fulfilled back in 2005 with their 1st World Series championship in forever; some still like to remind me of that year.  Although it didn’t provide me any happiness, it did provide happiness to the city, and for that, I can’t be that mad.  It’s about time for the Cubs to provide the ultimate happiness.

The signing of Joe Maddon was the first domino to fall this offseason.  If the depth of young talent in the Cubs system wasn’t enough for free agents to want to come here, Joe Maddon has helped that draw.  He seems like a guy you would love to play for.  The signing of Joe Maddon should put the stop on all that talk about the plan, 2016 and beyond; 2015 is the year.  The goal as he said is playoffs and World Series which should be the goal every year.  It is finally a reality again in Wrigley.

Coming next is the signing of Russell Martin, which if I was a betting man, would place a wager on that to happen.  Next is a big free agent pitcher; Jon Lester will be in Chicago next week to meet with Theo & co.  Next, if not another big free agent pitcher, will be the adding of some more smaller pieces, such as more starting pitching and some more veteran clubhouse presence.  I will be following these offseason events more than I typically do with the anticipation of 2015 building.

The Sox will have a lot of action this offseason too.  They’ve started the offseason with some mixed news.  They have the bad news of Paul Konerko retiring and the exit of one of the best Sox to ever play the game.  They had the good news of Jose Abreu winning rookie of the year and Chris Sale being a Cy Young finalist.  They had the bad news of Victor Martinez, who was rumored to be on the Sox wish list (and many other teams for that matter), sign a 4 year contract to stay in Motown.  What will be the next news coming out of Sox camp?  I’m curious to see what happens to Alexei.  Although not a big fan of his, he is one of the best SS in the game.  That sounds ludicrous, but it’s true.  He is getting up there in age.  He could continue to serve as a big piece on this present Sox team as they shoot for a World Series every year per Rick Hahn, OR could be the Sox biggest trading piece to acquire young pitching that would put the Sox in better shape for the years to come.  Will there be other free agent signings on the south side?  I’ve heard Jeff Samardzija as a name the Sox are interested in putting into their left hand heavy starting rotation; that would be something.  Although the Cubs are getting most of the headlines (as usual), the Sox will have some things to say this offseason as well.

So are you ready for some baseball?  It’s a little easier for baseball to creep in this early for me, with the bright future of the Cubs coupled with the early end of Bears season.  Yes, we have the Bulls and the Hawks, which as I mentioned yesterday, are the current hope in the city, but the Cubs and Sox will actually have seasons worth looking forward to next year, and next year has already started.  The hot stove is burning here in Chicago… the 2015 baseball season has already begun.
