June 14, 2019: Father’s Pride

All this talk about the playoffs, the finals, Game 7, and the thrill I get watching my teams reach their peak; it’s real, no doubt. Yet, I’ve got something that’s better. Watching my son play baseball…now that’s what it’s about. In a little Father’s Day preview, let’s talk about a father’s pride.

It was game 2 of our season…finally. If you recall, which you probably don’t, it was a tough debut for our team, including for my son. Two strikeouts and multiple meltdowns capped off our season opener; that was 12 days ago. Yeah, we had to carry that L around for a long time; we had plenty of time to talk and practice since then. Couldn’t wait to get back on the field; Thursday gave us that chance.

It all started on defense. In his normal first base position to start the game, he caught every throw that made it his way, and made the inning ending out, as he fielded a ground ball and beat the runner to first; we had seen plenty of that last year. He was very happy as he got ready for his first at bat in the 2nd inning. I finally talked him out of using his bat that we bought him; it was too heavy, plain and simple. He’ll get to use it again, maybe next year. But for his 3rd AB of the season, he swung a lighter stick. He fouled off 3 straight pitches before hitting a nice shot to the left side of the infield. After a brief bobble, the SS threw it across the diamond. It was going to be a bang bang play, but it got past the first baseman; my son didn’t break his stride as he motored to second base and his first hit of the season. He was beaming; so was I.

Today would be the first day he pitched too. I think I was more excited than he was. He did well. He had really good command of the plate, but was coming up a bit short more times than not. As their coach came into pitch to one of their kids, a sharp groundball came right back to the mound. My son fielded it cleanly, then spun and threw to first; it was like a real major league play…I didn’t teach him that; that was pure instinct. Unfortunately the kid at first missed the throw as it hit him right in the chest; he was ok. My son would be ok too. He got better and picked up the first 2 Ks of his career.

Finally, came his last at bat. Their pitcher was throwing straight gas. He took one looking, took a good cut at one, then went down swinging. He put his head down, didn’t throw his bat, walked over put his bat against the fence, and walked up to me. He took off his helmet and said, see Dad, no crying. The growth from one game to the next was already evident. He’s going to be ok.

I’m sure we haven’t seen the last tears, but I’m also sure that he’s only going to get better. We lost the game 7-0, but you couldn’t tell, as he and his buddies ran around the field after the game was over. As the other team seemed zoned in and ultra competitive, I was just happy our kids played better this game, especially my kid. Still surreal watching him play out there; it blows away anything I can see on TV, anything I can see from my Chicago teams. Yeah, it’s my son that takes the cake. Until next game… I’ll just be sitting here, beaming with pride.
