Bote, Bryant, Heyward, Contreras, and now Baez: the Cubs are becoming the walk off winners. That’s 4 in their last 8 home games, and 5 out of their 16 total home wins. Can you dig it?
It was especially nice in this 2nd game against the Phillies. Monday night was a heartbreaking loss, twice getting the Phils down to their last strike, before they tied it on a fluke hit, and won it on not so fluky a hit. Great game though. The Jake standing O brought chills for me. Yu’s performance was his best as a Cub in my opinion. Coming back to take the lead, on the wrong end of a close call, and then losing in extras. High drama. It was nice to be on the other side of that tonight.
It started with KB in the bottom of the 9th drawing a lead off walk; he also scored the game tying run on the Almora dribbler. He is such a great base runner. He has got it all going on right now. Rizzo had a big hit. Contreras had such a nice AB before popping out. The Phillies walking Heyward was very questionable. He’s been slumping big time, but maybe they remember that walk off grand slam last year. On the flip side, Almora has been hot. Now he didn’t scorch it, but it was enough to tie the game. Then came the latest of our walk off winners. Baez, who spent the last two days resting his heel, missing his first two games of the year, came in and needed exactly one pitch to win the ballgame. Who’s next?

Cole takes the mound against his ex-team Wednesday night, then Lester. Another non-series loss looks possible. Two games up on the Brewers looks great. But who’s next on the list of walk off winners? My bet is Rizzo. That’s the thing about these Cubs; they have so many guys that can beat you. They have so many good players. I was telling my son this same thing. When I was a kid, I wasn’t so lucky. Sure, we had great players over the years, but on this year’s Cubs team, there are more than ever. We’re loaded plain and simple. Not winning another World Series would be disappointing. Funny saying that…
Back to Yu for a second. I’ve been giving up on him slowly but surely. I give him a lot of credit for his performance against the first place Phils and Cubs legend Arrieta. Sure, he ended up giving it up in the 6th, but it was a quality start. Give me those all day. And in a big game, to see him do this, it gives me hope for Yu. And with hope for Yu, and the rest of our starters cooking, it could be a really fun summer.
These two games have been so good…both one run decisions…I’m calling it; one more walk off win for the Cubs this series. And I’m going Rizzo. Go Cubs!
